Finally ready to start rebuild of 1972 16' after sitting for 8 years.

-Hull and top deck are ready for paint,
-Still need to remove and replace fuel tank.
-Motor and drive, I have a early 70's volvo and Ford motor 190 hp. that
will bolt in without modification.
-What will this drive package provide for cruise and top speed?
-Will rebuild motor before installing, any easy upgrades to do at this time?
-Will be needing parts:
-Eng. hatch
-Complete interior
-Gauge package
-All hull hardware

Thanks, for any help.

Nowheres near enough

Lets say LOW fifties, high forties.

The VOLVO is not "sleek" by any means. If this is a 302 I would SERIOUSLY consider upping the ponies to 300-ish.

actually, hydrodynamicly the Volvo is as good as a BravoI. The real problem were props. We now have that handled. On our1966 16 witha 302 220 HP and the Volvo alunimum prop it runs about 55mph. The new prop will add to that and some effiency and fuel economy. No numbers yet, my sistyer is buisy with twins and a case of who cares at this moment. My suggestion is enjoy the power you can get cheaply than upgerade if need be. The hard part is the hull and tank. the engine is the easy part to do at any time if need be later.

what sort of budget were you trying to stay within?

Budget!!!!!!!!!!

Here is how I would look at it:

If I can get low to mid fifties out of power I have I would be happy.

I know that top speed is all that matters!

But
What speed do most 16's actually run at while cruising say on a 20 mile run in choppy inland lake waters?

What benifit does upgrading to the 270 or 280 out drive?

Thanks,

Again

I don't know much about volvo outdrives so I'm sure others can help you out on that one

My 16 cruised comfortably about 38-40 at 3500 rpm (no tabs which is another deal altogether)

I had an OMC 305 with a cobra outdrive
top speed was just under 60 :)

I live on Lake Lanier. On a weekend you will have a hard time cruising southlake at more than35 to 40. As for the drice there is little difference unles you get a 280t that is trim unit. Again get it in the lake than worry about the HP. My boats the 18 can go high 60's and my Criterion 22 can go mid to high 80's. but I don't travle that fast. my cruise is between 35 and 45 mph in either boat. some travle faster but I usually don't unless I am at a rally and I need to keep the lead boat in site. Unless there is a poker run than thia is different.
Lets get together next summer with some of the others for a BBQ at my dock. cell 770-318-1136
