hey guys these two look like they would be a nice drop in motor for a boat but wanted to get some feedback from the experts the 383/425 looks really nice and prices are pretty good for a brand new engine.

383 340HP (http://www.crateenginedepot.com/store/HT383E-Performance-Crate-Engine-17800393-P1583C53.aspx)

Those are not Marine engines. I bought my GM Base Marine 502 from these guys:www.1800runsnew.com

For another $250.00 they upgraded my camshaft to produce approx 470 HP.

They are new GM Marine Base engines. The same base engines Mercury, Volvo, and all others buy to build on.

well , some of the engines mercruiser is putting out isn't exactly marine engines either ... i bought a remanned 5.7 from mercruiser and it didn't have brass freeze plugs and it was all cast internals ... i bought a 383 with forged rods , steel crank , hyper pistons and am very pleased with it so far ... knocking on wood !!! price was 3200.00 oil pan to intake ... i had all the accy's ....

I checked and they are 4 bolt main blocks with all forged internals and brass freeze plugs. also where did you get your 383 smokediver that sounds like a great deal for the price.

Does the GM crate motor use a steel shim head gasket or a composit gasket?

D & J Machine , they are in Az. I can get you the number when I get home ..They will install a comp xtreme marine cam and stainless head gaskets . They will also give you a choice of alum. or cast iron heads . i went with the cast .
