Has anyone removed a fuel tank from an 18' 2x3 without removing the deck? If so where did you make your cuts?

:) I'll keep an eye on this one. Had to replace my tank and had to lift the deck. Couldn't find a glassman who would guarantee integrity of inner liner if glassed. Good Luck.:)

Grossr, pull the deck off to do it. Much easier and faster. And I've heard that if you cut your cockpit liner, the Donzi police will find you and maybe take your boat away.
Do a search here. Lots of people have done it and posted all about it.
Can't wait to see how you decide to put the tank back in.

I can tell you that if you plan carefully, you can get get the deck off in 2-4 hours.
It's not at all hard.

My deck-off threads are listed below. I would encourage you to remove the deck, as there are a lot of other smaller things you can take care of with the top off. Keep us informed on your decision and progress, and remember we love pictures. Good luck!

Jamie, tell us how you really feel! Kind of reminds me of the movie "Anger Management" with Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson...pretty funny stuff.

Remove the deck. It's not that hard and likely cheaper than the glass work to put it back together.

Here's my deck lift. (http://www.donzi.net/forums/showthread.php?t=33989)

If you cut the boat the Donzi police will be the least of your worries...

Grossr,

If you haven't de-mated that deck yet, here's some other input. I kept my deck on to do a tank change. When we started on it, I didn't realize there was any controversy...but there suuuure is. Not only did I replace the tank, but also a large portion of rotten sole. A good glass guy is essential; Steve Conoly from Sarsota master-minded this one. 'No big deal' was his take. Looks fine and is solid. Time will tell, but at this point there isn't any reason to believe it will have problems.
(The included pics are downloaded from from a thumb-drive; they are large because no program available to resize.....life on the road) If you are interested, I can get you more info...good luck!

WOW! That is some serious tank corrosion there. I pulled the tank out of my 68 and was suprised at how little corrosion there was.
Looks like a job well done and ought to get some interesting replys.

Why did you move your steering from left to right??

That was my response on the old tank, too. Did you notice the liberated ski locker in the background of that picture?
Moved the steering because of torque considerations for the repower, an Alpha with RH rotation. There was no engine or much of anything else when I bought it.

Scot,

It was all there as originally assembled. Take a look at the pic of the tanks...scroll over to the upper right and the locker is in the background and sitting on the lawn.
You know Steve M did a similar process on his Hornet also.
I go flying this weekend, but hope to get some Biscayne Bay time the weekend after. I'll be going back to SRQ by the end of the Nov, I
[I]may[I] leave the boat in Miami a little longer....just didn't get enough of the good stuff.

Hope to see ya,

Brad
