Hey Gang,

I have come to the dreaded decision that it is time to repower my '79 classic 16. Right now it has a remanufactured chrysler 318 in it that is only a couple years since rebuild. The problem is the drive unit, which is the original '79 Chrysler 300 stern drive (huh? that's right). The hydraulic system on the drive is pretty shot and finding parts is nearly impossible (as you may imagine with such an old drive system).

I am posting this to see what are some favorite configurations for the classic 16 that I could go with. Appreciate any info.

If you are going to repower, most guys go with a SBC/ Alpha Mercruiser package. Parts availablity, prop selection, and ease of service are a couple of reasons.

Chrysler products didn't power many 16 Ski-Sporters, do you know what the hull number is?

350 SBC and Alfas are pretty popular.

The hull Number is DMR167200978

The boat is listed as a 79 on title documents even though the last two numbers are 78

just want do you want to do with the boat... or should i say, have the boat be capable of doing... this will pretty much dictate teh path you decide to take...

Is everything all the time an acceptable answer?

Actually, I do not need top performance in terms of speed because quite frankly I lack the balls some of you have taking these things 70+ shoot even 80+ from what I have read.

Right now I get about 62-65 depending on how she is running that day ;) That is good for me maybe a bit faster if possible. the only thing I definately want to improve is speed off the line. Right now she drags to get going, probably due to a very heavy engine/drive configuration. Possibly getting some tabs would help that too but I would have to learn to become proficient with them :bonk:

some pictures of the boat ... apparently this Hull was one of the last made before the sweet 16 was reintroduced in the late 80s. Picture was at night so you can't see the real shine of the coat ;)

I will take some of the drive and post them for all curious individuals ...
