Looking for some Ideas for converting the old points/condenser ignition on a 1968 H/M 427 400 HP engine. Just wondering if anyone has seen/used/heard about a good setup for updating. I want to replace rather than update the distributor and possibly go with a coil-less setup. Any suggestions appreciated.

The simplest replacement IMO is to go with a performance distributor. (http://www.performancedistributors.com/marinedui.htm)

Greg, that is one of the options I was considering. Looks like the best option for the money. I was also looking at the MSD setup, which is very nice. But the performance distributors combo appears to be engineered to work best in a marine application as a whole. Thanks for the info, any other suggestions welcomed!

on the other end of the spectrum, I have been running a Petronix replacement for the points/condensor for the last 100,000 plus miles on my fe powered '67 Ranchero. Trouble free.

In my 1971 Mustang I have a 351 Clevland and I run a penatronis for 6 years and no issues. My Corsicam also has a 351 H&M Ford Clevland and I run a Unielite for 10 years and no issues yet. On my Criterion I run a MSD and no issues yet-6 years old.

I don't have the boat in my possession yet, paid for and picking up tomorrow. Does anybody know what the stock distributor is for the H/M 400HP 427 engine? The owner says it's the one that came with the engine. Just trying to do some preliminary shopping on the advice you guys have given me so far. thanks!
