Ok guys my 4.3 v6 with a 4bbl edelbrock carb does the run on thing for about 30 seconds when I turn it off. been so long since i had something do this i cant remember were to start. going to try adjusting mixture screws and check timing this weekend and put a couple of cans of carb cleaner in the gas just looking for any other things i should look for.

Sounds like you might be diesling.
Are you overheating?

How fast is the idle?

Stays running or does it run backwards with a little cough before it turns off?

Stays running.

Ignition module

ignition

starter relay

Runs backwards(just to let you this is what your engine is doing when it runs on) somtimes

****ty fuel (go to premimum)

too fast idle

timing off

good luck

Hi Mike,

If it is dieseling, I had the same problem with my 2bbl. 4.3, try higher octane gas or let it idle a bit before shutting it down.

cheers,

jeff

Dieseling is usually caused by a vacuum leak or idle set too high. Do not let it diesel; it is hard on the engine. Your secondaries could be sticking slightly open. It's not an ignition problem. The ignition is turned off!

What is you avatar picture of? I can't make it out. Just curious.

Carl,
What is you avatar picture of? I can't make it out. Just curious. My boat was rear ended at a stop light. It is my crunched outdrive. Orion Marine is working on it now.:( edit: I just changed it to myself in Parrothead mode.

800 is high. Try slowing it down to 600

Idle is a bit high but I'd go with vacuum leak.

It could be some carbon build up causing it to diesel.

tomorrow i will be working on it so i will let you guys know what happens just filled it up with a fresh tank of fuel and 2 cans of carb cleaner in the tank. will do a good cleaning of the carb with spray cleaner and re adjust idle mixture idle speed and check timing as well. gotta replace a trim solonid too so busy day tomorrow.

4.3's with Alphas need 600-650 in gear or they will die during a shift, the closer to 600 without any stalling issues the better.

If you have excessive carbon build up it can cause it at times too.. This is usually caused by long idling, bad fuel, burning oil, etc... J / Lakeside

ok good news and bad news I got it running right clean and tuned carb the idle mixture screws needed to go in 1/2 turn each snugged up the 4 bolts that hold carb down and lowered idle a little bit runs great again. but found another problem outdrive fluid leaking from my top cap of the drive when its trimmed all the way up its dripping slowly out. It looks like a simple fix in the manual just pull the 4 bolts remove cap and replace o-ring and put it back am I missing anything?

You might want to drain your fluid. May have water intrusion. See if water or "milk" comes out. As for the top cap, it may be the culprit and it probably is an easy fix.
