According to my manual, any drive/engine set up utilizing a remote engine location requires an absolutely straight run between the engine and drive. I suspect this is to insure shaft alignment for steering and trim, i.e., no U-joints except the ones for trim and steering.
I was wondering if anyone has seen an installation where there was a splined carrier bearing located where the coupling would normally be and then a U-jointed drive shaft running forward to the engine, giving more flexibility in engine location?
The possibilities would be interesting...mounting the drives extremely close together in hulls where extreme aft engine location isn't important.

Some company makes drive shafts with CV joints in them, cant remember the name but Carolina Classic Boats all have them inside.

Thanks Scott.
So do I look at IMCO?

Wouldn't this be a neat boat w/Bravo's or Arnison's?
My question centered on retrofitting a boat like this w/outdrives.

We had bright red one named "TOP HAT" in the yard for many years, it was used as a rich mans runabout. It had 327's ran really decent not sure of speed but the ride was very good even in a bad chop. The owner shipped it back and forth to Fla every winter.

George a set of Jack Shafts to A drives woud be sweet!

I seriously doubt they came in RED

and, I am 99.999999999999% sure they NEVER had 327's, since those engines weren't made after 1968 anyways, and at 210hp they wouldn't barely get that hull on a plane, even if they did have them...

Jim now you have me thinking probably 350's, have not worked on it since 74 it may have been painted but it did not look like it! Just left a message for the old owner will let you know what he says, he has enough loot to have most anything his way. As far as planing I argue that one, there is a ton of 34'-38' convertibles and DCMY's that plane just fine with SB's that weigh better than twice as much as the Cary.

Ok got the straight Poop! So much for my slipping memory, the custom orange but close to red 29 Cary named Tomahawk came with 300 hp 327's it was later repowered with 270 Crusaders says it did a little over 40. The also custom 33 did have big blocks at near 400hp it ran low 50's its correct name was Hat Trick and had sharks teeth on the bow.

In the mid 70's, there was a Cary named Beep Beep running in the production offshore class (possibly ran as a modified production boat) -- had a picture of the roadrunner on it of course. It ran the then new Merc Tempest engines with TRS drives and flat kicked ass. It came out to the west coast and ran right by everything we were running at the time. Typically beat some of the non-production boats also. I think it may have been a 29' Cary but the deck looked a lot like the one in the pic referenced by George --- it was one fine rough water boat.
