Mercruiser T-6 vs TRS

What's is difference between a Mercrusier T-6 drive and a TRS? They look the same to me except for the T-6 uses a Mercruiser Trans and TRS uses the BW Velvet Drive. There is a very cheaply priced T-6 drive system on Ebay, which I thought would be a good replacement or back-up for the TRS in my '86 Classic.

Not sure about the T-6, but as far as I know, the TRS (TRansmissionSport) used a Merc II transmission. Many have been replaced by the B&W, which requires moving the motor forward about 4 inches, if i recall correctly. Maybe that's just the older ones though. Did yours come with the B&W?

Maybe its a TR drive with a 20" lower unit?

I just bought my boat a month ago. It's somewhat of a fixer-upper, but I was lucky to find a good 22 classic at a fixer-uper price so close to home. It has the Velvet Drive TRS. It blew a seal first time out, but I have got the trans out now and the parts will be here this week. I can't tell if it came that way, but the instalation looks stock. The engine was replaced last year and is quite new. Drive seems solid and the drive top end was redone same time as the engine. It seems stock to me. All the mount locations are original. It has a mostly stock 454 BBC. Runs great but only turns 4,000 rpm. I will look at the prop after I get it running for a while. Tops out in the high 50's.

Sounds like an older Mercruiser 330 with TRS. Great engines, run forever. The TRS and velvet drive is great too. Around 300hp at the prop which should get you into the 60s. What prop, is it an old cleaver? Its a good setup and can be worked. The drive will easily handle 500+hp esp on a small boat. TRS parts are still pretty easy to find.

That drive on ebay is a regular old TRS. It is going cheap because the listing is so squirrely. T6????

my 86 classic came stock with the 454, BW trans, and TRS outdrive. I've owned since brand new so I am sure. where is the post on ebay, i could use a spare drive
