View Full Version : Engine Update

Been working on the engine. As most of you know, I am replacing the camshaft, heads, intake and carb with 264 comp cam, vortec heads, Edelbrock preformer intake and edelbrock 600 cfm carb. I have run into a few problems I am posting so that if anyone goes down this road, they hopefully can avoid them.

While I made sure I got Vortec heads that were machined for higher valve clearance, I did not compensate for the wider dual valve springs. Off to the machine shop for a 300.00 bill to machine it out.

Intake manifold gasket was for non-vortec heads, so ordered a new one. Forgot to get a bigger diameter spark arrestor for the new carb, ordered one. Had to order new plastic timing cover.

Heads are on, the 264 cam is in and hopefully will get the intake and carb on today.

Just wondering about performance with the upgrades. Before, I was running at 5600 ft. Mercruiser 5.7L (210hp at prop, actually 173 when you compensate for altitude), Alpha (1.47 gear) with a 15 pitch stilletto at 4400 rpms. Boat will only run 45.6 (GPS) at this altitude.

Now I think I will be in the 280-285 hp at the prop, actually 230 to 240 with altitude. I know I will have to play with props, probably start with a 19 pitch. Any projections on what my 16C will run? Should find out this weekend. Whoever guesses closest gets a six pack of your choice:wink:

Also, Mercruiser specs for the engine were 4300-4600 RPM's. Should I try and turn more than this with the cam, carb and vortec heads?

I would verify your tach. You are currently running -7% slip with your numbers. 45mph seems pretty low for 170hp as well.

Using your numbers picking up 60 hp should give you around 5 mph so I will guess 51mph. :D

Come on! I was hoping for more than low 50's. I will give you few more numbers for some other props. I will try the 19 first. It ran 61 on the speedo with the last owner (19 pitch) at basically sea level (probably 58)on GPS) at 4600 rpm's.

At 5600 ft i ran it at 48.3 with the same 19Pitch at 4050 rpm"s

Prop is a Vengence.

TTBOMK 15-20 hp=1 mph. Sounds like a good engine package. Is that a marine grind cam? What comp ratio? You could probably go high with your thin air. What exhaust?:alligator

There's really no set rule for how much hp=mph. Hull design and weight play a big role as well as how fast you're surrently running. Going from 50 to 55 mph takes a lot less hp than going from 80 to 85 mph. I repowered my last boat that ran 59-60 with 250 pshp and it ran 66-67 with another 70hp.

Honestly I would think you should be running 50 now with 170 pshp and around 57 with 230 pshp.

Also, a blower will compensate for thin air and may have you running 70+. I guess it comes down to how much money ya want to spend on it. :boat:

You know the golden rule; he who has the gold makes the rules. There is no one else around that could do it.

Not going to take a guess Rootsy?

Mr Fixall, it is a roller cam.

Carl C, come on, I was already running 48.3 in the old set up.

As for my own guess-here is my thinking-if the previous owner ran 61 speedo (now thinking about it probably 56-57 gps) with 210 prop hp at 4600 and I am 30-40 hp above this, I should be about (optmistically) around 58.3 (hopefully I will be able to treat myself to a six of BASS on this one). The only problem is if the old owner bulls****** me, then my guess is screwed.

Thanks Rootsy, I think we are on the same page as what this will run, hopefully. Better than low to mid 50's some are posting.

Should know when I get back on Monday. You can change your guesses up until then with no penalty on the beer.

Engine is complete and going back in. Heading to the lake Friday, will be back Monday.

Coldwater- ya think that procharger would fit under my hatch?:) :) :)

By the way, what speed is considered unsafe in a 16? 70+?

I remember about a year ago I saw a 16 on ebay (it was black and painted with flames) and it had something like 450+ hp. The owner said he did not know how fast it would go because he was afraid to open it up:lightning :lightning :lightning . Anyone know what happened to that boat after it was sold?

56.2 mph gps, Moose Drool (can't get it around here)

Donziweasel

Kirbyvv- Moose Drool is good stuff- if ya win, ya might want to try Snake River Lager-won an award at the Denver beer fest, made locally.

Rootsy- Kept the V. Do you think the IV is a better ignition? What kind of hp on your 16?
Used Fel-Pro .039 on the head gaskets. Went as thin as I could for compression.

By the way, if anyone is intersted in how much I have spent, I am in the $1,400.00 range and that included the following-
Edelbrock 600 cfm marine carb
Comp 264 Extreme Marine Cam
Edelbrock Eps Manifold
Vortec Heads
Machine shop
Gaskets
Front Plastic timing cover
Alpha alignment tool
Dual Valve Springs

Not included yet-
FLuids
Filters
Jets (if I need them)
Gas (you can't bump the hp without bumping the gas bill)

the V-6 Tbolt 4 advances the timing a little sooner than the V8 ignition and is a popular conversion , however , I am told that there really isn't a difference at the top end ...

A stupid question? Why dual valve springs? Do you need that kind of spring for a 264 cam? Is'nt the lift around .48-.490?
