Anyone familiar with www.enginefactory.com ? I am in search of new power for my 22 Classic. They recommended a 502 BBC with 510HP here is the link to the engine details page; http://www.musclecarengines.com/502510HP.htm

What is the are the pros and cons for carburated and fuel inected engines ? And will their recommended engine fit a 22 Classic. What other changes need to be made when I decide to take this route and what speed can be expected ?

theirs a few things i would ask?
1) whos crank shaft and all the internal parts are they using? eagle, too heavy.

2) i wouldnt use crome moly rings in anything ask if plasma is a option.

3)whats the lobe seperation of the cam.112 deg so it can idle in gear.

4)crome oil pan?crome timing cover ect, will leak and rust unless you plan to polish it every weekend.

5)plan on spending a few grand on a decent exhaust system..

6)what kind of drive do you have and how old is it?

Should last if your easy on it,as long as you not to hard on the drive getting on plane or have a 4 blade prop on the boat and popping the boat out of the water it should last..

I received an answer from them;

The crankshaft is a GM forged steel crankshaft.
The pistons are powerforged with moly rings.
The lobe separation is 110.
The oil pan and timing cover are black cast. They will not rust.

I would also ask what rockers they are. They say 1.7 ratio, but it seems they are not roller. I would want roller.

Felpro are good gaskets but they make a couple different grades.

They say "beam" rods. There are "I" beam and "H" beam rods. Which are they. Both are good, unless you're going to sustain 6000+ rpm the "I" beam are good. I suspect they are GM dimple "I" beam rods though.

Put a good starter on it! I had one puke on me at AOTH and ruined the whole weekend!

Your breather and valve covers should fit that motor to replace the chrome ones.

As far as your drive goes....I would say it will be fine. I have been running my stock 1994 bravo in front of my 502(1yr) 540(2yrs) with no issues other than the shift linkage at AOTH this year and it had nothing to do with the power. My philosophy is that more than likely it will cost the same to fix it when it's broken as it will now, and it probably won't break.

You will also need a flywheel. The 502 is externally balanced which is different from the internally balanced 454. But check with them to confirm. If by chance they have internally balanced this engine the flywheel from your 454 will work.

A 454 flywheel is externally ballanced & the 454 and the 502 share the same 4'' stroke....a 502 had a 4.490 boar size to give it the xtra cubes..gm if i remember correctly did somthing with the ballancing of one piece rear main seal 502 crank tho..when i convert a 454 carb engine to a 502 merc makes a conversion kit which includes a new flywheel and a seapump with a fuel pump port becausr the (GM) block didnt have a fuel pump port..But all in all you should have your flywheel checked for the proper ballancing..if your 454 has a 1 piece rear main it should work but have it checked...

You are correct! I had a brain fart!!

:bonk: :bonk: :)

Fly wheel ID numbers:

MARK IV 454/502 = ID 3973457
GEN V WITH CAST CRANK/OVAL HEADS = ID 10101171
GENV WITH FORGED STEEL CRANKS = ID 14096805
GEN VI = SAME AS GEN V

I was confusing the Generation differences and the 396/427 internally balanced engines!!

Sorry for the confusion

I dont think that intake will fit under your hatch,,I would upgrade the oil pan to a 10 or a 14 qt one, 6 qts of oil dont seem to be enuff for that engine..
then you have to consider another 2500 for a decent exhaust to make that monster breath..

I think the 572 you saw was in a gt21??
