"Sank by the Mobil Bay... They fired the first harpoon at her yesterday and today EOD set off bombs. It only took an hour but she's been taking hits all yesterday from the other ships....she just wouldn't sink".

Sad day indeed.... I've deployed on this ship... first deck I ever landed on during a pitch black night during blue water ops, giving me a new found respect for the game I had chosen to make my living... sorry to see this fine lady go

Fair winds and following sea Belleau Wood...... :flag-navy

We did a Sinkex with the ex USS Guam..... she was welded for max watertight integrity. Surface ships (targets) and aircraft took turns blowin the hell out of her and at the end of the day she was still floating...... until we took care of her in 1 MK48 torpedo...... Was eery listening to her break up on sonar as she sank.....

Leave it to the Submarine force to get it done..... :flag-navy
