We had a blast with "Bay Way Marine" and Budman & Jodi! For those of you who are not familiar with the Suwanee, it's a "brown" river, who knows how long, with crystal clear springs along the side...for many, many miles. We took the Rabco and met up with Tom (owner of Bay Way) his crew and Budman & Jodi. We put in around 9 Am and did 104 miles roundtrip by sunset on Sunday. The only mishap was a 4 foot long Sturgeon that shaved off the side of my big "Marine Igloo" as it jumped in my boat at about 30 mph.
Here's a few pics for your enjoyment.....
We're "sold," we'll be boating on the Suwanee in the near future.....come join us......keep your head low when putting the hammer down.....:eek!:
UN-FRIGGIN BELIEVEABLE!!! That thing could have really hurt you!:eek!:
Which spring were you walking the boats in? The water looks way low, which is much more preferable to way high. :)

WOW - I have never seen a sturgeon live in person even though they are (were) indengious to TN rivers. I had no idea they were in FL waters! I thought they were more northern. They are just about extinct in TN but the state wildlife agency has begun a effort to reintroduce them in my local waters.
Great looking Jack Russell - I'm a sucker for them...

Yeah, I was stunned when I saw what he did to the old Igloo. Thank God no one was sitting in front on the center console....
I couldn't tell ya which spring it was Joe, we saw quite a few. I do know however, that was the farthest off the river and shallowest. It was kinda cool "dragging" the rigs up river. I didn't know a 22 Classic could double as a flats boat... As you can see, we were in knee deep water. We reached a point where the 22 was grounded, so we left her behind and walked another 5 minutes to the spring.
RedDog,
Yeah, I thought they were a north western fish. Apparently, they were transplanted in this area. They are protected here as well. It's one ugly fish...
Mommy says thanx for the compliment on Libby! (the Jack Russel)

We have those sturgeons up here in the rivers - mississippi, st. croix, and minnesota. Story goes the st. croix fish have gotton sooo big, that divers have to be very cautious as they have been attacked with sevear bites to arms, legs, etc. Next to muskies, they are a badass fish. Never heard of one jumping into a boat yet. They usually sit on the river bottom like a dead submarine. I'd have to look it up but I believe the DNR has them protected up this way also. Must be our version of a sea cow/manatee.
The sturgeon is a natural species here. About the only rivers that support much of a population in Florida are the Escambia, and the Suwanee.
The come out of the water like a Polaris missle in the Suwannie during the summer. Like giant mullet. :)

The Escambia River is in Pensacola, across the Bay from me in Gulf Breeze. I have not seen one, but I have heard they are there and are huge, something not to tangle with. But neither are the Bull Sharks in the rivers and local waters either!!:shark:
Also the big lizards we have in Florida. (Aligators)

Several years ago, I went to Chrystal River with my Regal Rush Jet Boat to dive with Manatees. I also spent a day on the Suwanee River at a old motel on Hwy 19 called the Suwanee Gables Marina. Put the little boat in the water and tied it up to the dock by my "Cabin". Explored the river as far as Fanning Springs.
Diving and scratching the backs of Manatees is awesome.

sturgeons may get big but they don't have teeth and aren't going to be biting on anyone. I'd hate to be hit by one while running a boat down the river though :eek!:
