I guess I've gone brain dead. I can't find the grease zerk for the TRS gimble bearing. Pulled the drive off the other day to check the bearings and alignment to see if I could find the missing 600 RPM's I am experiencing this year with the Criterion. Went to grease the gimble, and for the life of me can't find the grease zerk inside or outside the transom assembly. M.P, Smoothie, Cuda anyone have a clue? The service manual says "Put 14 strokes of grease with a pistolgrip gun in a new bearing." Man they got me fooled.

Any ideas:confused:

their is no gimbal bearing in a trs housing,,the bearing that the input shaft from the drive slides into is lubed from the trans oil in the trans...i usually take the drive off and just greece the splines on the input shaft from time to time...

The input bearing is what Farmer is asking about and my 1978 TRS has a grease fitting, which I thought was dumb because of the fact that you have to take the outdrive off to grease it.

It does have a gimbal bearing. And also what I would call a carrier bearing that is forward of the gimbal. This has a Borg warner trans not a merctrans. I stuck a long screwdriver through the gimbal bearing inner race and turned the "carrier" bearing with the splines to see if it was smooth and free. Forward of this bearing there seems to be a plug or cap of some type to seal off the splined shaft. I thought I looked for a grease zert when I had the drive pulled because I wanted to grease the bearing while turning it by hand. The zerk could have been covered with grease.

Thanks for the help,Iwill pull the drive back off and check again.

Well after looking at the parts list I guess it does'nt have a gimbal bearing, it has a tailstock bearing. Unservicable?

Mark,
My merctrans has caps that need to be removed to get to the fittings, dont know if your BW would be the same, see attached.
