View Full Version : Replacement Engine Suggestions

I have had a a serious (well maybe) failure and will need cylinder heads,cam, at least 1 piston and maybe more on my 1985 Classic Volvo 290A SBC.

Question #1 Where did the 290 hp come from on this engine? Heads? Cam?

Question #2 Where can I buy the proper heads, have larger valves than the
norm.

Question #3 DO I need marine heads or auto heads and what's the difference?

Question #4 Need a suggestion on replacement engine if needed. (Really wanted a larger more practical boat for the waters here in South FLorida)

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated

is the 290 a SBC?

Thanks for replying Matt. Numbers on the block are SN cu43970 ,are there block numbers also?
Seems like most of the 4 bolt early replacement engines are 260hp, you think these have more? As far as the cyliner heads go, I was worried about trying to use automotive heads thinking there has to be some significant difference.
