Interesting article. Built at a very impressive boatyard (think America's Cup) and played a role in WWII as well.

I am glad you posted that article Cliff. I had wondered where it had gone. I had looked at it in Newport and didn't get a photo.

Cigarette was designed and built by Gar Wood in 1923 in Algonac. According to the book Gar Wood Boats, it originally was powered by five Liberty engines driving three screws. The book goes on to say that Mrs. Hammersly did NOT like the boat and it was returned to Wood two years later and exchanged for a 50' Gar Jr Flyer. Gar kept the 70' boat for his own use, renamed it Gar Sr, and used it extensively as a big cruiser and for military testing applications where it became instrumental in suggesting early PT boat designs for the Navy.

Glad to see it has found a new friend. Too bad for Mr. Hammersley that they didn't offer silent choice in the 1920's - might've helped w/ the wife!
