View Full Version : Boat drifts back & forth at low speeds?

I noticed at low speeds under 1000 rpm my 18 classic drifts back and forth.
Is this due to the 24 degree bottom / single engine & short lenght?

I had a 24 foot Active Thunder that did the same thing but my 28 foot Cigarette with twins did not do it.

This is what single outdrives do for fun just to irritate you.

If you have trim tabs put them all the way down when in tight quarters the wandering will dissapear it will steer exactly where you point it, just make sure you raise them before you throttle up! You can damn near put the bow under:eek!:

All singles will "hunt" at idle speed. If you don't touch the steering, many will build pressure on the side they are hunting to, and go back the other way, in essence, running a straight course. :)

I agree with Cuda, the LESS you do, the straighter it will go. After a while you be able to keep it straight no problem. Tiny corrections, before you need to.

Think of the movie Capt. Ron " A boat is like a woman, It responds to touch! " :sombrero: :pimp: :boat: :jestera: :jestera: Jamie

I just let her alone and she corrects herself.

The 18 classic is a sweet riding boat. I owned several Cigarettes before and with my 18 I can cruise at 2500 RPMs doing 42 MPH and only burning approx 7 GPH. My Cigarette would have been burning approx 30 GPH @ 3200 RPMs doing 42 MPH. The sea conditions just can't get much bigger than 2 ft chop.
I love this 18.
