Test your pump from time to time to be sure it functions properly in automatic mode. I installed a backup pump 2 years ago. When I initially installed it I tested it by filling the bilge with a water hose – worked great and turned on automatically via the internal float mechanism. This was probably the last time the pump ever ran. It did not work this spring when I tested it. Apparently I had some corrosion in a wiring connector. Glad I found the problem by testing rather than on the water with a leak.

Several years back, on my big boat, the ribbed plastic discharge hose had split and any discharge water would have gone right back into the bilge. I was mightly glad I tested mine, too.

Thanks for the reminder.
