number placement

My 22 zx originally came from Iliinois,and i removed the old numbers a couple months ago. Is there a rule of thumb for proper placement of the new numbers? From what i can tell viewing photo`s of other Donzi`s,they seem to be just below the rub rail (easily visible). How far back from the bow?
