View Full Version : Where do these two wires go?

In my 97 5.7...I have two wires that don't connect to anything. For some reason, both of them were covered in blue electrical tape so they weren't touching anything.
The first one is a circle connector. My damn VOM isn't working so I can't check connectivity to see if it's a ground but the wire is black and it coming out of the loom that feeds the starter relay.

The second is a male spade connector. Again, just a black wire and comes out of the loom that feeds the electric choke.

I'd say the circle connector is a ground, probably to some accessory. Maybe a trim pump?

What is the color of the one that looks like purple & white? Do you have thunderbolt V or EFI?

I have the Thunderbolt setup...2BBL. I think the purple/wht is really purple/yel. I'll have to check in the morning. She's all buttoned up for the night.

I was thinking ground too but to what...I don't know. Everything to my knowledge works.

Can not find a purple/yellow on a thunderbolt IV or V when used on a 5.7, but can find one on the thunderbolt IV when used on a 4.3. The blacks are probably ground, need to check with an OHM meter to be sure. The purple/ yellow on 4.3 Thunderbolt IV goes from the starter solenoid to an oil pressure switch and the electric fuel pump. When we converted our 4.3 wiring harness to a 5.7 thunderbolt V there were 2 oil pressure switches. One oil pressure switch for the gauges (purple/yellow wire) and one pressure switch for the alarm sounder (tan/blue wire).
However, there was also an extra wire and I don't remember the color that went nowhere with the 4.3 Thunderbolt IV and we did not connect it on the 5.7 thunderbolt V. If everthing works you can just leave it as is or if you need to know start ohming it out using a wiring diagram.

I realize that in the last picture it looks as though the spade is coming out of the purple/yellow but it's not. There is a plug in there. The black male spade is all black.

Does anyone have the 5.7 wiring diagram in a pdf or similar?

Black is ground, but check with a meter. It looks like the one we had going to our electric choke.

Does the boat run fine?if so then the wires just may be xtra wires..on some merc models they use a multi perpose harness and the ppl w tel trace shouldnt have that male spade plugged into it..just unplug it and thck them away...the ppl wire may be used for checking timing but not sure tho..

Roots...I already have two wires going to the electric choke. Any other ideas?

The pruple/white wire is for sender weather it be for fuel, water psi, or whatever, it just is a sender that you don't have a gauge for and thus never hooked to anything.

Get a manual for merc it will tell you for sure

Also on motors from Merc there are "dead end" wires...new motors are labeled as to what they are for.....As long as you didn't disconnect them and it runs don't be too concerned about it....

Could also be a bad wire in the harness on the engine, that was bybassed.

Well, I grounded the circle connector and now my Corsa Captain's Call operates smoother and I don't have to manually open the starboard solenoid anymore. The male spade is still zip-tied down and I have no idea where it goes. I am going to find all my old papers and manual before I burn this boat down for the choke problems it's been giving me.
