I currently have a std 55Amp 817119A4 alternator on my 1997 GenVI 454 Mag and I'd like to upgrade it to a higher amp alternator. In looking at the 817119A4, I see that it's a two wire alternator. All the ones that I see as replacements are either one or three wire. Which would be the proper replacement for the 817119A4? One or three?

You can go to 1 wire, it is self energizing so it only needs the 1 wire between it and the starters terminal. I would make up a new #8 or #6 wire depending on how big you go to go between it and the starter, do a good job taping the old wires.
