A friend is looking for a 20 cigarette. I told him to look for a 22 classic. which would be the better ride with equal power? (Big blocks)

Don Tamm's dad has Don's 20 Cig and I am sure he can fill you in on it, me and few others are partial to the 22.

Hard to go wrong with either.

The 22 is almost 3 feet longer and probably more forgiving with the soft keel. More years to choose from. I think the lines are better on the 22, and more timeless. I had one and loved it, it ran 80 with 500 Hp and was very solid. The cig might be more of a handfull.

Cig has teak and more dated looking plastic windsheild on all but a few of the late models.

But if you must have a cigarette, go for it. I have been tempted for that reason alone.

have riden and driven both, the cig has the same round keel as the 22 and rides are pretty similar the 22 will ride a little better in bigger stuff, the older cig were built like tanks and a heavy boat hence better ride but more hp to get them moving. I helped my pal Kenny restore a 72 cig there is nothing plastic or cheesy on the cig if done correctly and you'll find some nice storage bins as a bonus that boats runs 60 mph gps'd with an old volvo and a 350/350 sbc that's about the same speed as a tempest powered sbc 22 with an alpha, so a cig with bbc merc should run really good.
can't really go wrong here but for me the cig has 2 more intangibles to it
1. there are not all that many 20 cig out there
2. it is a true Aronow boat
yes there I said it let the verbal abuse start ;) :) ;p

What struck me more than the difference in ride in Kenny's boat was the significantly more storage space on the smaller Cig.

Matty, correct me if my memory is wrong, but didn't Kenny fabricate the beautiful wood dash himself- not a standard cig20 feature?

I have not owned both boats, but in my limited experice as a passenger, I think that they are very similiar in ride. The 22 Donzi has more storage room, so the only difference that I note is the more rare nature of the 20' Cig.
I would be happy with either as long as they had adequate power and both were in good shape. Since I own a 1995 model Cig., I am a little partial. The 20" Cig is a heavy and well built boat. I am guessing that the boat weighs 4,500 lbs dry. Some people in the past have attributed that this is the best riding of the 20' class of offshore boats, but that me be a little self serving.
Either way, Donzi 22 or Cigarette 20, you can not go wrong if you buy a clean well maintained model.

Cigarette Racing has told me that all of the "Sons" were customs.
I have a rounded keel, no ski locker, no side storage bins.
Storage is under the rear bench seat and on both sides of the engine under the engine hatch.

I had the privilege to bum a ride in that little yellow on black Cig 20 2 years ago and the owner put a lot of time and effort to keep it original right down to restoring the gauges and using the chrome Morse controls, anyone of us would have been temped to fit Livorsi gauges and controls. One of the few changes he made was replacing the teak inlay forming the deck stripe with Mahogany, which looks killer against the black deck. Even the small block is painted yellow. Some unique features on this boat is a storage locker just forward of the windshield, a great space for life vest and fenders. The cockpit floor is covered with an industrial quality non-skid, which is really maintenance free. This boat was still being offered up to just a few years ago as the Son-of-Gun which was offered with a variety of custom motor options as well as all of the go fast parts you would expect, but suffered from the same marketing problems as 22 SE, big price tag. I actually got to see one of the new ones on the trailer fitted with a 502.

As for ride, my first Donzi was an 18 and now a I own a 22. Although it’s built like a tank my impression without driving it, the little Cig felt a lot like an 18; you sit high in this boat just like the 18 and felt more agile than a 22. One more comment the boat has a huge hatch and great access to the motor, so a 498HO with a Bravo would have been a nice package for this boat.

;) thanks guys.......its always nice to here compliments on the boat. It came out pretty much as I had hoped.

Don't think I would ever go thru a restoration ever again. I've used it alot the past 2 seasons with no trouble.........:bonk: shouldn't have said that. The only thing I'm looking to change for this season is switching to an A gear ratio drive from the B on it now. Hopefully there's enough HP to push it.

Both are good boats,20 cigs have more "classic" lines to em IMO and are getting harder to find in good condition,,,while on the other hand there are many 22's out ther to choose from...any condition, any price...

In the Volume 3/Issue 1 of Extreme Boats magazine there is an article about a group of 20' cig owners up in Michigan. Marilyn Demartini wrote it and is called," Does size matter?"
