Finally got my title transferred, but the previous owner had his reg#'s painted on. It looks like with a brush and not too heavy. Does the easy-off thing really work? Will it affect the gel? Is there something that's better? Thanks.

I've had good luck removing numbers before using the Easy-off method.
What I would recommend is taping off the other numbers and just try one first. Then if there's a problem you won't botch the whole thing
You may have to do it more than once though.
And no , I don't know if 'Lemon scent' works better than regular

Our detailers @ work do a "double compound" on the entire hull with a buffer, then apply a good coat of wax to seal everything up. More often than not, the gel under the "numbers" is "shinier" than the rest, hence the "double compound" and wax sealer.

If you're local to St. Petersburg, call Rick @ Aqua Tech. Marine, he's real good.

...they just detailed the Concept today.....very slippery... :)

You can even try brake fluid, it removes paint is very mild. But a buffer and compound would be my first choice.
