Hello all...
As the topic say.. Can you please post some (preferably) high resolution pics of your favorite 22 Classic. Outside, inside and motor shots would be great.
I think that'll be a good fun and helpfull thread for new owners like me to help decide what style, color scheme and different ideas they want to go with.

Lets try to keep this a Pic loaded thread with the least blabbering :)

I know we have the gallery, but alot of the pics there are i think low res or small or just not clear...

So please lets try to get this classic 22 gallery rolling:beer:

:D Some of my personal favorites, truth is there are many more.....there are few Boats that have the profile and lines that a 22 Classic has, and the balance & Panache' that represents Donzi.

Culottas is 700 + Horsepower, Airboys is a lesson in detail, Ed's is just so new and bright Red it is gorgeous, Poodles Critter is Rare, The Anniversary is growing on me, Brads has the craziest design scheme, and our little 22 with it's little squirrel cage, really scratches my itch.

The hull # is DMR220371181. The two-color stripe was custom ordered from Donzi by the first owner (I was 2nd) who was a dentist and graduated from Michigan and wanted the school colors. The blue on the boat is Donzi Lion's Blue, the yellow on the stripe is Cigarette Yellow #5947. In '82 the 22 with the 330TRS listed for 26,689--same engine was offered in the 18 for 25,310--
I stupidly sold the boat to a Donzi and wood boat collector at Lake Tahoe (temporary insanity). I guess we better let this thread get back to pictures. Ed

Real classics have them in the middle...;)

The dealer I bought this boat from orders them with the AE/GT fairing from the factory. www.pier57.com You should be able to order one from a Donzi dealer and I would consider it for anyone who needs to replace a tired windshield. It won't fit older models though. Check out the eye candy at pier57 - my boat is still pictured there. Yes, the gas fill is where it belongs - on the side! :anchor:e-mail at Frankie at pier57, he is also a member here. "sellsman 11"

I think my '97 has the same windshield. dclassic, what prop are you running? I have a 300hp 454 B1 and there is a 4 blade Bravo 28P prop which seems way too much -- doing approx 62mph at sea level.

I am unsure of when the SS windshields were first available but I do know that 2002 was the last year. The story I got from Nelems was the gent that made them for Donzi died and no one else could make them, so now there are just plexi shields. Personally, I think all the stainless trim is what really adds to the "classic" look on these boats. As far as the prop, when I got the boat from Tom he supplied me with 4 props! I am not sure which one I have on now, I will have to check. However it pops right out of the water and will bury the speedo with a bit of chine walk. I am not sure if that was the prop that Tom GPS'd at 70+ or not. As far as I know the only other mods are the Stainless Marine Manifolds and the K&N Intake. Fun boat!

Boatnut & DClassic,

Boat - be interesting to know how many RPMs your turning with that 28" pitch prop. Try a 24" or 25" Turbo 1 on the boat. Should wake her right up and you should get closer or over the 70 MPH mark.

D - Tom is a great guy. Met him at AOTH 1 in 2000. He helped me set up my 98' 22 Classic with a Turbo 1 prop also. I gained 3 MPH by just adding that prop. Went from 65 with a 23" Mirage to 68 with a 22" Turbo 1 GPS of course. Notice the Turbo is 1" less pitch and only 14.25 diameter and still faster than the Mirage. RPMs remained almost the same. The Turbo maybe ran an additional 100 or 200 RPMs topping out at 4850. Tomahawk always looked and ran great! I'm not sure Tom has reveled all the secrets of the engine in that Classic though. If you have, and I'm sure he included this prop, a 25" Turbo 1, put it on and run the boat again. I can't remember Tom ever saying anything about chine walking or being below 70 MPH with that prop. That boat was always smooth as glass and very fast at Lake Cumberland.

Better yet, boatnut, bring your boat to Awakening of the Horses VI and talk to a represenitive and or try a Turbo prop before you buy. Dates are May 18th thru 21st on Lake Cumberland in Jamestown, KY from the Jamestown Marina. There are special room rates, just tell the person taking your reservation your with the Donzi gathering in May. There is a launch ramp, docking, and food available. Saturday night we have a Texas barbeque. Some of the best eatin you may do all summer. Lake is humongous and plenty of room to open the horses up.

Sorry, back to the pictures. Nothin else looks or performs like a Classic

Boldts,

The chine walk may be operator error :-). I am still learning a bunch every outing with the boat. I may have a bit too much trim or something else a bit out of whack causing the walk. It is not bad, just a bit lively. The whole package works so good I am a bit reluctant to change anything. Tom did a great job setting the boat up and keeping it perfect. I hope to see ya'll soon.

I am turning 4400 (according to dash tach). Speed was 60.4 GPS at 1326 ft altitude freshwater. The engine is a stock carb version 300hp 7.4L 454 Mercruiser --- I don't think there is enough ponies there to turn the 28P Bravo1 4 blade at 4400 so I suspect the tach is not accurate?? I wouldn't expect to be able to get near 70 with 300hp in a 22 but I could be pleasantly surprised, like Merry Xmas!! Soon I will pull the boat out of the shop and try to calibrate/check the tach and then decide what prop to buy --- I have had others also tell me to get a Turbo1 with 23" pitch -- it the tach is accurate (which I doubt) going from 28P to 23P should result in too much RPM as the engine is rated to run between 4200 and 4600. I was also advised to use the Turbo prop as the boat porpoises a lot at mid range speeds with the Bravo prop -hard to settle it down even with trim all the way in. As I mentioned in another thread awhile back, I wonder how many of these tachs are accurate as we rely on them to dedide on props etc. I would love to go to some of the gatherings and meet you guys but it is a long haul from California. Ed

Boatnut, If it were me, I'd pickup a cheap Tack and Dwell meter. I haven't priced them lately, but I don't recall them being to expensive. Once you hook it up and start the engine, you'll know right away if your stock tach is on or off where it should be. It might be a simple problem like your tach is set on the wrong number of engine cylinders. Most tachs have a knob on the back of them to set use with a 4, 6, or 8 cylinder engine. It of course should be set on the 8 cylinder position for your boat.

My 22 had the 454 MAG carbed edition in it. I could only turn a 22" Turbo though because the drive ratio of the Bravo1 had been changed to accommidate the added horsepower of a supercharged engine that was in the boat before my purchase.

Good luck getting her set up correctly. Sorry, I missed the CA location. Your right, that would be quite a haul to Kentucky.

boatnut
02-26-2006, 03:37 PM
Thanks again Scott. I had already checked the # cylinder adjustment on the tach--no simple fix there. Although there is an adjustment screw so as soon as I get a chance to run the boat I am going to hook up a tach dwell unit and also try another method of tach calibration. If the tach cannot be brought into range with the adjustment or if it is not linear I will replace it. I don't think it can be accurate unless I am getting one hell of a lot of slip from the prop. The drive has a label on it indicating it is a 1.5 ratio. The drive and prop were almost new when I bought the boat last year as the original drive (and three other Bravo 1's) were stolen from the dry storage place where the boat was stored. The new unit was actually a Mercury factory rebuild with full warranty (looks like new). The prop also was new so it wasn't cut down or repitched or anything like that. I am not familiar enough with the boat/engine to tell how wound up the motor is by sound but with about 15% slippage I think I must only be turning the engine about 4000rpm with the 28" pitch. Interesting stuff.
