Is the 496 motor shipped from GM with 496 ci or does mercury stroke them? If it is shipped that way, is it just a crate motor or is a 496 used in any GM vehicles? Thanks.:wrench:

I have a 496 (labeled 8.1 liter) in my 2000 Yukon XL. It is a standard GM block.

Thanks, Dog, that answers that. Now one more question please. On the 496 HO with closed cooling system are the exhaust manifolds raw water cooled?

This is always a good reference.

GM Powertrain (http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpowertrain/engines/specialized/marine/index.htm) Very cool link. Thanks. I always thought that GM shipped automotive engines that were extensively modified by Mercury. What can I say, this is my first IO and apparently I've still got a lot to learn.:lookaroun

The 496 manifolds are raw water cooled. The difference which adds to their longevity is that the joint between the manifold and riser is a dry joint.
The old style wet joint was the source of many a ruined engine from water in the exhaust.
The wet joint had water flowing up through a jacket into the riser.
The dry joint eliminates the upward water flow through the two pieces by using hoses between the riser and manifold.
