I have found a 22 classic that has a 454 volvo gmc 385 with the DPS package & dual prop volvo outdrive. It sounds like a pretty good deal but from what I have read the 496 HO is more in demand. Does anyone know the difference in the speed between the two & any advice on the Volvo. I have been told by some to stick with the 496.

Sue, this boat on BoatTrader has a Volvo DPX outdrive...is that what you are talking about? There is the possibility that the better outdrive would offset the HP difference resulting in similar performance.

I don't know a lot about the difference between the standard Duo-Prop and the DPX, but I do seem to remember that the DPX is a racing drive that is well respected, albiet not very common. Hopefully others will chime in, since I, also, would like to hear some details and opinions.

All Volvo drives are VERY durable and reliable! A DPS drive is a great drive. I would just drive the boat to make sure it is setup properly.

If it's a DPX drive then that is a really good thing! Those were Volvo's performance drives for a couple years. Bulletproof drive with built in external steering! :D

As far as motors are concerned only the newer boats will have the 496. The 496 engine is more modern and has a little more power. But, I actually prefer the 454 and 502(mags) because they have forged internals where the 496 has cast.

Nice boat, I wonder why it has those huge K Planes rather than the normal tabs.

can someone point out the EXTERNAL steering??

is a 2000 385 package worth what 2004/2005 425's are going for?

Jim, I believe it is "external" like the ITS is "external"

It's built into the gimbal assy.

Actually, it is NOT like the ITS, but is indeed built into the gimbal assembly inside the transom.

Here is a DPX drive. DPX's had full hydraulic steering. They made 500's and 600's as well for a brief period in 1999.

That 600 package is bad azz isn't it?! Too bad they didn't stick it out in the performance market.

With the interest and questions raised by this boat (on more than one occasion) I'd really be interested in seeing an experienced C-22 / 454/502 B1 owner taking it for a run and reporting on how it handles etc .
I'm sure Sue would have a few interested parties

How many of these OMC/Volvo packages were put into 22' classics?
Were any of 415 DPX versions used in a Donzi?
I think these models were introduced in 1997, with the 500 and 600 introduced in 2000. I wonder how long OMC/Volvo produced the 385 and 415 packages? Could you buy one today, and from where?

I know of 1 420?DPX here on Winni... I haven't seen the boat in a few years though. It was supposedly very fast. I think the DPX duo-prop setup would absolutely ROCK in a classic! I wish I had seen this boat....

PS: Congrats on a mighty cool boat! Bring it to the Lake Winni Poker Run!

Yep, that 22 should be a darn good set-up. A DPX equipped boat handles like its on rails. Just don't use those props for dredging! They are just too expensive for that and they are not available on the used market when you need them. I would suggest finding a second set on eBay just to keep on hand just in case.
