The '78 X-18 I purchased in August has been sitting all winter and it is time to get the cut outs in the stringers glassed before she hits the water. Marine survey and my own poking around indicate the stringers are solid. Is it possible to do this without pulling the motor? I really don't want to have to pay to have the motor pulled if there is a way I can reasonably do it without.

motor out or not you are going to have to sand the area around the cutouts so that the new glass will adhere properly... having the motor out of the way will give you more room and less chance for a messy job...

Motor out would be my preference.

With the proper tools it only takes me 1-1.5 hours to pull my engine..I would pull the engine.......

I would take the time and pull the motor. I'm no mechanic, and I have done it three times, once from an X-18, and twice from an 18 2+3. All successfully.

Your project has the strong possibility of falling prey to the phrase, "Not enough time to do it right, but always time to do it twice." You want to prep the surfaces properly to insure a good bond with the new glass.

Ditto on all of this good advice above..................pull the engine, it's the only way to do it right.

Note to self: Pay attention to "what JustSayNo said"...............yeah buddy, I've been there before.

I pulled my engine last summer, one guy helping, one watching, a case of beer and about 2 hrs. Piece of cake!
