ecently bought a 1968 16' ski sporter that had a new engine package installed in 1987. The outdrive that was installed is a 290 volvo penta powertrim and the engine is a V8. However, I am not sure as to the details of the engine other than it is 1987 Volvo V8 engine (the distributer is on the back of the engine). If anyone could provide some information on the engine it would be very helpful.

Small block Chevy but they were using a few different cubes, if you have no tags serial & casting numbers will help.

There are no clear markings on it. If it helps to know, it is red.

If I had the engine rebuilt, could I achieve 270-300hp?

Also, I have been considering repowering the boat with a new 4.3L V6. Would it be possible to achieve 270-300hp with a new V6 and could I match the engine with the 290 outdrive?

Thanks,

Ward

A V6 will bolt up, but the sound and power of the V8 is more desirable to most.

Could I reasonably achieve 260-300hp with a V6? Would is suffice to pull skiers? If not, then I will just stick with a rebuild on the current V8.

The V8 will be less costly to get make some decent power, resale down the road will be much better.

First I would see if the engine you have will start up and run, if it does try to run ot for atleast 30-45 minutes then do a compression check if it seems to be pretty decent run it and save some $$$. It is way to easy to go overboard when getting into a resto whether it is complete or partial, I would get it cleaned up and running then decide just how much you want to throw into it. I know a few that have gone "Whole Hog" only to find out they wanted a different model, most lost their shirt in the swap.
