How fast- what is the performance of a 2001 Sweet 16 with the V8? Totally stock! Stock wheel.... Low hours w/o modification? Cannot find specs anywhere. Thanks

Does the '01 have the MPI 5.0 Chevy smallblock (260 ponies)? Also, I'd be leery of what someone calls a "stock" wheel. I've heard of all sorts of props put on factory delivered boats (or changed out by the dealer).

Anyway, my stock '03 MPI 5.0 with a Turbo 22p prop (never a factory-equipped prop as far as I know) runs a solid 60 on GPS.

This discussion has taken place here before. Do a search on "16 Classic prop".

You are right, the question is- what is top speed at wot with the "right" wheel and stock setup. What are you turning (rpm) at 60 mph? How long do you feel good running in the corner with this setup? Would you run her at 50 for 2 hours?

I have a 1990 sweet 16 with a new V8 and get the same performance numbers ( solid 60 )

I would not hesitate to run this boat at 4000 rpm all day ( between 45 and 50 mph)

It actually seems to work best between 3600 and 4200 RPM

my o1 16 5.0 EFI 240 hp with the stock prop would hit the rev limiter at 5,000at 58mph on the speedo. Then I ran a 24p Turbo at 4900/4950 it would do 64 on the speedo and 61.2 on the gps. Lee

50 mph for two hours hmmm? sounds like a poker run to me. The sbc is prertty much bullet proof and would probably handle it ok. Now that's not to say that things don't go wrong. Having said that we make some decent runs at AOTH and I would say that the avg speed would be 50 mph + with many sprints in between. I haven't heard of any sbc issues there other than a busted water hose...........right Doug ? Nothing that some duct tape and a good bildge pump didn't take care of .

Start with fresh oil, watch your air time, fill up the tank, put your money on the table and throw the dice .

speed though is gonna be relative to the prop and rpm.. my 16 cruises at 3500 rpm in the 50 - 52 mph range... so not much strain on the motor.. now if you are running WOT continuous you better make sure it is setup on the fat side of the fuel curve and you have plenty of cooling for both water and oil... you probably won't "hurt" the bottom end but you will probably cause the valves and seats to begin to deteriorate... especially on the exhaust side...

Need to think about a shower!

This 60 mph is at optimal propping (just below 5000 rpm). With the Turbo I, the boat tracks true and strong and corners well. Porpoising is minimal.

Would I run for 2 hours at 50 mph? This is about 4.2-4.3K rpm (IIRC). Prolly not. To be frank, the 16 is just not that kind of boat. If I wanted to run that sustained speed, I'd prolly go with the 350/Bravo combination in an 18 Classic. And Phil's correct, definately would need a drive shower.

Others may argue, but if you are talking about an optimally propped, stock set-up, the 16 w/5.0 is not ideally suited for the kind of running you describe. Maybe occasionally, but sustained? I say not.

My 2 cents.
