Just to remind everyone that computer threats are still out there and can get even the best of us. I got hit yesterday looking for a s/n for software I bought and the company went out of business. After 4 hours of cleaning my computer, I think I'll go buy new software instead of reviving the old one.
In my research I had found that some of the spyware and virus removal companies may be partly to blame for the number of infections. It makes sense, the more infected computers, the more they sell. Some companies are pulling in $500k a month so it is obviously a problem.

Here are some tips:
1. Stay off of "shady" sites (yeah, this includes porn)
2. Do not open emails from people you don't know
3. Turn off scripting in your email program
4. NEVER run an .exe file from an attachment unless you know who it is from, you are expecting it and you KNOW what it is.
5. If you think something is weird with your computer, it probably is so run the three programs below to be safe.
6. Install and run these three program once per week. You will be amazed at how much crap you get even being good

1. AdAware SE http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
2. Spybor search search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
3. Trend Micro Housecall http://housecall60.trendmicro.com/housecall/en/index.htm

Hope this helps people.

I myself have a hell of a time paying money to a company to fix their own bugs but what the heck. Make it easy braind dead simple and people will pay the extra coin. AOL is a perfect example.

This all reminds me of Bell and Cincinatti Microwave. Both companies made the radar detector for your car and the radar for the cops. Must be nice to be in kahoots and laugh your way to the bank.
