View Full Version : Will a carburated blower setup fit under the hatch? or just go with a 540?

I really want to get 550-600HP next year. I was looking into a procharger setup for my 454 mag. I got all excited when I learned catch22 did it to his. After checking pictures I found out he's got a MPI motor. That's how it fits under the hood. I have 1/4" clearance between my flame arrestor and my hatch. So now it looks like swapping to an MPI setup PLUS a blower or for that kind of money, maybe I should just build up a 540...

IN MY OPINION... a procharger would be simple way to add more power but it will contribute to a shorter life for your existing engine. If you have the money a 540 stroker would be a good way to go. If done right it would provide alot of power with more longevity. Like the saying says: There is no substitute for cubic inches.

Looks like we could have a Pensacola power war soon. Barry Eller just replaced the 454HO with a 502. Zimm's talking 540. I should be doing the Alpha to Bravo/IMCO shorty swap this winter in anticipation of more power down the road. Of course GeneS likes his fast toys so we'll all have a hard time keeping up if he catches wind of this.
Here's mine below.
You can tell I have some catching up to do. :(

I was looking in a Procharger catolog. The 454/502/7.4 Carb Kit measures 25 1/4" high. Stock say's 24 1/8" = 1 1/8" taller?? ( measureing from cl of crank to top of carb enclosure.

Big Griz has that setup, doesn't he?

If you go with a carb hat, rather than the carb box, you will have lots of room...........Ed

OOOOOOOOOOH! Who makes a carb hat? That might put me back into contention for a blower over a building a 540.

edit: I found it! http://www.superiorairflow.com/

Now I need to measure to see if I have 4" from the base flange on the intake. I bet I do. Now back to the procharger catalog!

Catch 22 has a scoop.

I have one of those Hats under my hood. If you need any measurements. That hat gaine 15 hp over the Procharger Hat.

Zimm, here is Grizz's Critter 502/Procharger set-up. By the way, it moves out OK. About 84 GPS with him, me and Deneen and fuel on board. Plus the weight of his 7 separate GPS units to prove unequivocly that we were going that fast :D
Hint, grab some plumbers putty or your kids putty (if you have some :D ) and put wax paper above and below a small (tall enough) pile of it. Close the hatch, lock it, the open it. Mic the height you see. It takes all the guesswork out of it and really helps if you are one to get scared in small, dark, confined spaces that reek of gas :D
