What is the size? I had a YELLOW 73 17 footer with a 165 Merc, hull looks the same but mine was a sport model. It had a single helm seat stbd. and a fold down sun lounge to port with two rear jump seats by the engine box.

It is a 1971 17'. I have had no luck finding similer boats, or info. I started the resto last nov. I would love to see pics of yours, if you have any. How did it run? Was it Pacemaker badged also?

Appearently it was offered as a stern drive, bowrider also.
Its what happened to the Jr.

Thanks, Formula, that is a cool boat. Do you know if it was a modified Formula Jr, or a totaly new boat?

Buizilla- I was giving away the idenity, not the boat:wink:

I hate to say this here, but I was really trying to get a better look at the Jeep. :lookaroun

Its "sort of" a totally new boat, in the sense that it is factory but only some of the mold to the hull was completely new. It was popped from a reworked hull mold of the Formula Jr. Just like your boat.

Understand that this is my theory until someone that worked at Formula in the early seventies can confirm it.

The Theory goes like this:

The production of the JR stopped in '71. Never found one that could be confirmed made after that date. But from '71 to '73, there are these 17'3", 24 degree deadrise, boats with the exact same bottom, strake pattern, chines, and 6'7" beam as the JRs, but they have more utility type decks and sole lay-outs. Both Walt Walters and Jim Wynne did design work for Thunderbird/Formula. If you take a JR hull mold and alter just the four feet or so of the tumblehome in the stern so the topsides are vertical, you have exactly the same hull profile. But now they were OBs or doghouse type sterndrives with a more forward helm and two + two seating or a bowrider configuration. There are not many of these, and this makes sense since the original JR molds would have been nearing the end of their useful life cycle anyway. And in the mean time Walters designed an entirely new set of molds for a new series of run-a-bouts. So the theory is that the JR molds became test beds for these transitional and more traditional designs.

This boat looks soooo much like one of our Haines Hunter runabouts in Australia. The Donzi connection runs deep as John Haines built the Formula 233 here under licence for many years. I have heard rumours that he built far more boats than he paid royalties on and hence the relationship died. There are many models of Haines downunder that emulate the usa Donzi/Formula boats it is incredible. I'll email you guys some pics if you are interested. For the record I have a Haines Formula 233 approx 1981 model and it has just been repowered with a new Mercruiser 496HO Bravo 3 DTS package including Corsa Captains Call etc. Hoping for a genuine 60mph and lots of great weekends!

No Problems Scott. I'll send a few pics of my 233 before and during the restoration. I'll also get some pics of our local Haines models that strongly resemble your Donzi's. Regards, Andrew

Scott, this is probably the wrong thread for it but while in the topic of Australia I'm also interested to find any pictures of an Australian named Arnold Glass. He raced offshore against Don Aronow and other greats at the time I'd say maybe late 60's or more likely 70's. From memory one of his more renown boats was called Cigarette 1. He is now long since retired and my marine business looks after his Baja 25 with 496 + Procharger down here in Sydney. Sure there are faster boats out there but he inspires me that he still peddles the Baja at 78mph and he has just turned 80 years of age! A few photos on my 'wall of fame' in my office would look great and I'm sure he would be flattered. Hope some of you Donzi guys can help me out! Thanks

A good friend of mine has this exact boat in Mobile, AL:

It is in original condition and very nice. It looks pretty cool sitting next to my X-18. If you want his number, email me. He might come off of it sooner than later.
