OK here is a good one for you to try out......

This is a gearbox with 3 gears in it. Gear 1 has 25 teeth, gear 2 has 20 teeth and the third has 30 teeth. The box is 250 mm deep (meaning front to back, not top to bottom). Also there is 10 mm of spacing between the gears and each end of the box. Using the information in the drawing how many quarts of oil will be required to obtain a depth of 50 mm with the gears removed (ie not displacing any oil)? The drawing is not to scale.

Good luck. :wavey:

I just have one small question...

WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH MICHELIN TIRES??

rant over, resume smartass prognostications

LMAO....Jim...... I have been educated by the locals.... we don't make "tires", we make "tars" and we lubricate gears with "earl"....

But to answer your question... absofrigginlutely nuttin.

1.393 liters = 1.47658 qts.

Still wrong even with the correct units....... keep tryin.....:biggrin.:

The reasion I asked for quarts is because you have to run down to Pep boys to get your earl and it's all in quarts...... ;) :biggrin.: ...basically to make it a pain in the ass.

This is just like the time Thomas Edison gave a glass globe for a light bulb to one of his workers and asked him to calculate it's volume. Edison came back about an hour later and found the worker with pages of measurments and calculations trying to determine the volume of the spheriod part, the taper of the cylinder part, the radius at the interface of the taper and sphere. Edison snatched the globe out of the workers hand and filled it with water. He then poured the water into a graduated beaker and read off the volume.

Answer to your problem....fill the gearbox to the required depth....pour out the oil and measure the volume.

Always go with the simple solution.....:rlol: :D

True you could do that, but can you do it on paper......

MP you have a PM regarding some tars...... :yes: :biggrin:

I'd say 1.83 quarts.

Here's the right answer now.... 2.153 quarts.

okay, we know the depth of the box to be 250mm, now what is the width of the box? you make no mention of that..

Solve for the diameter of the gears, then add the radius of the outer gears to the CtoC measurement and add 20 to get width.

WARNING>>>ANSWER BELOWOK so the trick is to find the radii of gear 1 an gear 3. This is done a couple of different ways. This is just 1.

PCD= Pitch circle diameter
M= Module (or pitch)
A= addendum
T= # of teeth

PCD= (M)x(T)
M=A

So to find out how wide it is from the left side of gear 1 to the right side of gear 3 we do the following (I'm leaving out the mm units to keep it a little cleaner)

(PCD(M))/ 2 + PCD(M) + (PCD(M))/2 = 118.75

((25M)/2) + 20M + ((30M)/2) = 118.75

12.5M + 20M + 15M = 118.75

47.5M = 118.75

47.5M/47.5 = 118.75/47.5

M = 2.5

PCD= M(T)

PCD1= 62.6
PCD3= 75

So now that we know the PCD of the gears we can add their radii to the 118.75.

31.25 + 37.5 + 118.75 = 187.5

You must now add the length of the remainder of the teeth to the PCD's. This is the addendum of the tooth...the part that extends beyond the PCD to the outside diameter and since A=M M=2.5 we must add 2.5 to the left gear and to the right gear so we need an extra 5.

So adding the 5 for the addendums and 20 for the (2) 10 mm gaps between the gears and the walls.....

187.5 + 5 + 20 = 212.5

So the length from inner wall to inner wall in 212.5mm

So Volume = H x L x W 50mm x 212.5mm x 250mm = 2656250 mm cubed.

2656250 cubic mm = 2.656 cubic dm = 2.656 liters

Since 1 liter = 1.06 quarts

2.656 x 1.06 = 2.81536

You need 2.82 quarts of oil.

Did I really just type that....... I'm ready for summer.......:banghead: :computer: :banghead:

Greg K

forgot about using pitch diameters and used only circle diameters...:banghead:
Now for you...if the 25t gear is rotating at 5000 rpms, what is the 30t rotating at ?

2.82 qts. Is that Imperial or U.S. qts??

1 U.S, gal= 4 litres

1 Imperial gal=4.55 litres....................Ed

there are 2 guys I knew who would know the answer to this
one died of starvation cause I used to beat him up for my lunch money, and the other guy is in a coma cause he was on a train headed to st louis at 45 mph that met head on with a train headed to L.A. at 50 mph :jestera: :rlol:

now is this dino oil or synthetic oil ???

:p :)
