Not that kind of smartass...... Here's one for the engineer types out there......

What is the volume of a cube that measures 50x50x50 mm after (3) holes, each 20mm in diameter have been drilled though it? 1 hole through the face and exits the back, 1 hole enters the side and exits opposite side and last hole enters top and exits the bottom. All 3 cylinders are mutually perpendicular to each other.

Good luck...and no using any CAD software........

holes don't matter as the question is asked - 125,000 mm

the volume of SOLID material remaining after drilling 3 holes EXACTLY 20.00000000 mm in diameter and perfectly cylindrical to 8 decimal places through the exact center of 3 orthoginal faces to 8 decimal places and perfectly perpendicular to each face within 8 decimal places of the perfectly cubic cube measuring exactly 50.00000000 x 50.00000000 x 50.00000000 mm would be....

say the preceding really fast 3 times... drum roll please...

89189.87698280 mm^3

have a nice day

The volume is zero because because when you fill the cube it will pour out of the holes.;)

Do the holes intersect? If so,
...............2...........3
LWH-3(pi)R H-2(pi)R

I think

But I like Carl's answer better.

Rootsy got it.....

Then you should be able to tell me the volume of the "shared space" that all three cylinders occupy as well......

Nice job geek....... ;)

4/3*pi*R^3

Rootsy got it.....

Rootsy's answer assumed each hole was through the center and therefore intersecting perfectly - based on the question, that is not a given.

All 3 cylinders are mutually perpendicular to each other.

Rootsy got my drift though...... Your right.... I could have said they were exactly centered in each face.

Reddog...it's funny you post that link..... I was on that exact site a few days ago....... similar problem......

Here is another neat link talking about Steinmetz solids....
