Santa Jeannette keeps asking me what I want for Christmas. I want a GPS receiver. Being that I do not know much about them I need some input.

Which brand/model delivers the most “useful” bang for the buck?

Since Santa doesn’t equal free anymore I would like to keep it moderately priced.

Hey Bud -
The Garmin E-Trex is a real nice lower end unit (E-Trex summit is the version with an altimeter). Nice feartures and small package, great for the Classics. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00003WGP5/103-5490436-5664668
The Magellan Meridian is a nice unit as well. I use the B&W version for the truck and as a backup in the fish boat. The only thing I don't like is the back-lighting. I think the Color verison is better though. http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/405399503?v_c=Yahoo

As far as user friendly I highly suggest the Garmin..... Garmin just came out with a new unit that gives you a full color chart plotter and it brings all the XM satellite stations plus XM weather. Check it out on the Garmin website. Its the 376c model. www.Garmin.com/products/gpsmap376c/

I own a Navman, a Lowrance and a Garmin. My advice... buy two GARMINS! Etrex for a handheld (I'll won't get on a boat without one...), $79 at Academy. Easy to use one handed for Classic owners. If you decide on a hardmount, a 182C. I went Navman, wish I'd not. The 182C is brighter, better features and easier to use.

I like my Magellan SporTrack Pro for both land and water but just about everybody seems to use Garmin for boating.

If you are looking for a full feature unit that is readable in the sun , color, and can upload info into look no further than the Garmin GPS Map 76C or CS. bit pricey but has blue chart compatability as well as maps for lakes in the 3 different time zones. These are very detailed, markers and all. Big Green ZX has on and speaks very highly of it. Look on E bay I see them on there new from garmin dealers for less than $400.00 bones.http://cgi.ebay.com/BRAND-NEW-GARMIN-GPSMAP-76C-COLOR-GPS-with-WARRANTY_W0QQitemZ5832604459QQcategoryZ94870QQrdZ1 QQcmdZViewItem
