I purchased a Garmin 76smap and I'm trying to decide if it is defective.
The light page only allows you to turn it ON or OFF (no dimmer) and that causes the batteries to be depleted within minutes. Then the unit shuts off.

Does anyone have experience with this unit?

RICKR,

I also have a gpsmap76. I haven't had any problems at all with the backlight display. I probably get about 7-8 hours of run time with 2 standard duracell batteries and probably 4-5 hours with the backlight display on. You might want to call Garmin directly.

All the Garmins I have had only allowed you to to set the backlighting times in seconds, or ON ALL or OFF.

Rick your is page 56 of the manual. 15 sec 30 sec, 1 min or 2.

Rick, I have the GPSMap76. Do as John has recommended. I had difficulty getting mine to initialize when I first tried using it. I called Garmin and they were very helpful. They told me how to reset the thing and got it going in no time. Once you get it going, you will be very happy with it, I love mine. The optioanl windshield mounted antenna for the car is wonderful, if you don't already have one. Occasionally, I check on the Garmin website and download their updates. There may be some for your new model online already. Good luck.

Thanks for the help. It looks like the 3rd set of batteries is lasting longer.
I've had so many failures of Garmin products I'm gun shy :(
I'll do the software update and see what happens.

R-shack usually carries a good deal on a Ni-MH (nickle metal hydride) charger and Battery set. The good ones are 1500-1800 mAh. Should be about $22 for the complete charger and four AA batts. I don't know what the garmin 76 takes, but Ni-MH batteries really work well.

Thanks, Formula JR
AA Ni-MH is the plan for the GPS. We already have them in the digital camera. I'll look for the 1500-1800.

The 76S Map should be a great unit. 24Meg memory plus an electronic compass and barometer.
