Oh man that's a DPX drive! I was thinking it would be an SX or duoprop. If I remember right the DPXs are rated for up to 600hp! Built in hydraulic external steering too. IMO Volvo makes a better drive and the DPX is really tough!!!

Motors are pretty much the same as a Merc with the exception of externals. Ignition, EFI, exhaust, etc.

Those are very good drives but found mostly on cruisers. Don't know how well they work on a performance boat. It could stop the 22 from proposing?

The DPX drive is not a cruiser drive at all. It is their performance drive that was offered standard on the 500 and 600 hp packages.

The duoprop found is often put on bigger boats because they bite hard, but the also find their way on some performance boats. The DPX drive is a different animal and 100% high performance.

If the boat is close to you I would take it for a drive. I'm betting it's a bad-azz package!

Pretty cool package, but I'd have to see firsthand that 75mph claim out of a 385hp engine

now, if that was a 420 package, and 10k cheaper.... yowza.....

and to think i'm boat poor already

The Volvo-Penta DPX version is pure high-perfromance, not the "cruiser" version DuoProp outdrive. IMO, the DPX would be the best overall drive for a 22. The advantages over a single prop are superior handling - it should run like it's on rails, higher prop effiency with very little slip, and a top speed that should match a Bravo or most other performance single prop outdrives. The DPX package was sold with a warranty from Volvo-Penta in four gasoline versions: 385hp, 415hp, 500DPX, and 600DPX. Also, the DPX packages came from the factory with a closed cooling system as standard equipment. The down side is that Volvo-Penta dropped the line in 2000, and also props are available in only three sizes, but are available fairly cheap now on eBay.

All and all, that should be a kick butt 22 Donzi. Also, if you buy it, let me know if you need an "E4" DPX prop set; however, the E4 size is probably to much pitch for 385hp.

Picture of the factory 600DPX package below:

I'm sure it's the 385 vs the 330 like the 454 Mag vs the 7.4. The salesman is just getting a little carried away with the "racing motor" LOL. However, I would definitely consider the drive a racing/performance package! :D

That is to me this is the premier drive in the industry in its catagory, and yes High Perf not cruiser to bad I am poor! Hooked to a 385 it should prove damn near indistructable and fast what a great package, if true 75 with stock 385 HP is impressive!

This 28 foot "cruiser" at AOTH-III had the DPX drive - the performance really suffered

Yeah One Design makes some great cruisers! :D I think all of the Batboats still come with DPX drives. Maybe Chris bought a bunch of them?

At 385hp which 454 would that be ? Was the 454MAG 385 HP ?
As alluded to above I hardly think it's a racing motor.
But it is nice to see a C22 with something decent hanging off the back :biggrin.:

This would be very desireable over here in the boonies .
The DPX unit is amazing .... one test run and you're sold !

A friend of mine had those drives on his 38 Formula. He had some problems with the engines. It took a long time to correct the problem not to say getting parts. Everyone I talk to who has Volvo drives on their cruiser loves them but the performance Volvo drives are not widely used. Merc still has the market on the performance boats.

Merc has the market and probably always will. It's a shame that Volvo didn't stick it out with their 500 and 600 DPX packages. IMO Volvo makes a much better drive.

I agree - volvo has a great drive.
Volvo is starting to run neck & neck with Merc putting their drives on cruisers.

I very much doubt 75mph with 385hp. The Volvo drive is very solid but I am sure the duoprop will cost some top end, just as the Bravo 3 does. Cool, rare package tho.

I doubt a real 75 mph as well. But the duoprop does not lose top-end like the Bravo 3.
