I can't tell you about the 18s but the porpoising on my 22 is only hard to control when trying to maintain minimum planing speed like through no wake zones. It's fun to sometimes get her really hopping. Drop the drive and give her a little throttle and she levels right out. Everybody wants to do the Donzi hop!!

22 absolutely!

I can't recall seeing an 18 porpoise that is properly set up.

Have to agree with everyone so far. Having had both, my 22 porposed much more than the 18. That is until I put a Turbo 1 propeller on the 22. No more porposing and a real joy to drive from that point on.

My 18 only porpoises at about 3000 rpms. Above and below it does not at all, and that is with the trim all the way UP (Volvo)

22!!!!!!!!!!

It'll drive you insane if you dont have a turbo prop or looong trim tabs. My 8 levels off instantly while the 22 porpoises until you slam the tabs to stop it. (with wrong prop)

All my 18 experience is with older Donzi's and volvo drives -- no porpoising issues even with drives set on upper most position. I had a 1982 22 that did not have a porpoising issue, TRS drive, Cleaver Prop, no tabs.
I have a '97 22 that is difficult to settle down in the mid speed ranges --- it has a porpoising problem. Bravo drive, Bravo 1 4 blade prop (that likely has too much pitch) --- haven't tried another prop yet. Therefore my data indicates the 22 is more of a problem but it might be also associated with the vintage of the boats. Ed

I have had three different drives (Bravo Std., Bravo Shorty, Blackhawk) and probably 17 different prop combinations. I have come to the conclusion that without tabs my boat definately wants to propise around 2,500 to 3,000 rpm or 25 mph to around 35 mph. As soon as I get the boat to 40 mph, absolutely no porpising. The faster I go, the smoother she gets.

With trim tabs down, the problem is eliminated immediately. Which is why I am a huge proponent of trim tabs if you are going to have passengers in your boat. They do not always want me to demonstate how the boat is smoother the faster I go!

I think it is all in the setup, when my 22 with the Tempest and an Alpha drive with no tabs there was -0- porpoising. After the rehab and moving quite a bit of weight aft along with a Blackhawk on it did have mild porpoising, I put the BravoX on and the porpoise disappeared. I have run Mirage, Quick Silves, Merc cleaver and now a 4 blade Turbo Ultima with no porpoising, so on my setup props have no bearing.
