I paid $3500.00 for mine totally rebuilt with hd gears. I looked for about 6 months before buying it from a local mercury dealer. It's kinda like supply and demand.

JG480 got the "deal"... rebuilt by a reputable dealer... totally rebuilt... HD parts... and if it ain't right i am sure they;ll fix it.. same folks dougL has his drive done by... you know it's right and it'll stay together unless you get stupid

i have an easy $1500 into the rebuild of my drive.. that was just PARTS.. i did all of the labor myself.. totally... so buying an SS cheap... you don't know exactly what you are getting.. so it is almost like gambling...

there were a few SS;s floating around for sale on the east coast... a pair of them (they were all RH rotation)... guy wanted 2K + for each.. and they had no water pumps in em and were siliconed shut... lord knows what else was done with them... 3K for this scenario... that is too much.. 3K for fresh HD rebuild by someone who knows what they are doing.. well that ain't bad...

I have 3k in mine, purchase and rebuild, with all new HD parts, and I probably wouldn't sell it for that. 3k got me 6 mph, and it's literally a beneficially different, and much more FUN boat now. . Pretty good return on my investment, IMO.

.....or you could swindle someone, (uh, I mean trade your friend) to get an upper case, and use a Sportmaster/ModVP lower, and put together your own....While the parts are still available.

Tell me more about this,..... what gimble / transom do you use, gen I or Gen II? How many ponies can this handle? How "gentle" do you need to be (assuming an 18' classic)?

Thanks

This should go to the performance section.

You would use a Alpha I transom assembly (loosley refered to as a Gen I).
You could use a Gen II, but it involves machining and a bit of "fitting". IMO it's just easier to use a Gen I.

As far as handling horsepower, Alpha drives I believe are rated to about 300 h.p. , but if you ask Rootsy or Doug Lovins, they will say they handle more.
I'm sure that they would also tell you not to abuse the drive, and to change the fluid very frequently.

Here's one. You might have to buy the whole boat to get it, but that doesn't look like too bad a deal either.

Hello,
I don't baby my SS at all. If they are put together right
they should take 400-450 hp. The guy who did mine also
takes care of two on a cat with 575hp.
I do change the oil often and run a drive shower.

Tom, Cuda is right that's not a bad idea at all. Buy the boat, strip the SS off, bolt on a stock drive and sell the boat again. A bit of a pain in the @$$ but you if you want the SS you might have to bite the bullet or just wait for another one to show up............ or not :frown:.
