Does anyone know if any Donzi half hulls were ever made? I kind of collect them and would really like an 18 or 22 or Minx or 16 Half hull if they are available anywhere.
Half hulls are wooden small replicas of the boat usually for sail boats but many were made for power boats also.

They do make a 6' RC boat called a Bonzi.

This one is NOT a Bonzi (what ever that is)
It is an Aero Marine Donzi 38ZR

There's a board member (sorry I can't remember his screen name, something to do with wood....) who used to be Donzi's loftsman.
He makes wood models of Donzis.
Shouldn't be a stretch to do a half model.

Hey Curly, we be talkin 'bout the same guy...

Yup thats him, I think his models start at around $2000.00 and go up from there.

If somebody can get me a 3D cad file of the hull, I can machine it on my CNC router (maximum height off the table of 7"--that would be for a 14" beam model, should be plenty large.

Rust'n Rot, how many Axis is your machine. Controls and type? AB, Fanuc ?
Twin table? Nesting capabile? Turret/tool changer?

curious... :)

My firm has two CNC machines, one Fadal 3-axis (with all sorts of heads) and a CNC waterjet. I have been trying to figure out what kinds of interesting boat stuff I could cut out with them in off hours. We currently use them for manufacturing commercial aircraft parts and an occasional tile/granite/marble mosaic job for high-end residences and casinos.

Check this out: www.staraviation.com (http://www.staraviation.com), and click on waterjet cutting... I know, my website sucks but I am working on a redo right now!

The waterjet will only cut in 2-D but can cut outlines of boats in anything up to around 5" thick titanium. The Fadal could be fun, though, doing a half-hull out of something. I guess we, too, would need a CAD file. I thought about cutting license plates or something more interesting.

I may get one of our CAD guys to draw up a Donzi sideview and cut it out of something.

I wonder if I could get that fadal machine to do a half-hull out of wood? I'll ask the goofball who runs it when I get in next week. Maybe one of you guys with a CNC router could do one... We need to get our hands on a Solidworks or CAD iso drawing of a Donzi.

Mine is a very simple 3 axis machine, a Shopbot brand. It has a 16 foot long bed. I got it used but at $4000 it is the most expensive tool I ever purchased but by far the most value. Since buying it, I have learned BobCAD/CAM and recently purchased Rhino3D. While I have not cut anything but 2D parts so far, it is capable of more and a Donzi half hull would be a good way to learn how to do more.

On the replica Gar Wood speedsters I build, I cut out all the parts, frames, even planking with precut bung holes in them. It has gotten to the point if I want to cut something out, I cad/cam it, then put a board on the machine, and it is done. I am a power tool junkie, though. My motto has always been, even if it takes longer than doing it by "hand" I would rather do it using a power tool.

I was wondering what you were using.. :)

I have a non CNC, (NC) SCMI but it definately would not be up to task. And it is about 8 years old now. I was thinking about stuff like this, http://www.stilesmachinery.com/equipment/manufacturer/heian/5axis.htm
but this starts at about $200K and goes way up from there. You would need a lot of half hulls to pay for it.

So do we know anyone who has the CAD program needed to do a donzi half hull? Maybee start with an 18 or a 22. I was thinking in the 200 to $300 range however. I'll buy the first one.

For anyone interested in Half Models, check out www.TridentStudio.com (http://www.TridentStudio.com) . I've been to their shop and seen their work. It's first class and the pricees don't seem too far out of line. So far, I havn't seen any Donzis listed in their extensive list of models but an email to them might get a response.

The last time I talked to them was a few years ago, but from what I recall, they make a mold using the manufacturers "lines drawings", and then pop out half hulls as many as needed. The half models are then painted to your specifications, including fancy custom graphics just like you have on your boat if you like. EDIT: Fix spelling for Trident website.

Half - Hulls are so cool. My favorite sailing trophy is a half-hull that was painted to match my boat.

With all the available machining equipment, how about someone making replacement dash panels for those of us doing restorations? The dash on my Hornet needs a replacement and I'm not going back with the formica piece of %#@*( that was original.
I'm thinking polished aluminum and anodizing.

Didn't mean to hi-jack the thread.

CDMA, or anyone at DONZI, interested in offering up the table of offsets? for the 18 Classic?

Of course we would make a Donzi. We would just need to get the lines drawings so we can do the original carving and make a mold.

Subject: Half Models

I ( a group of us) are interested in a half model of the 18' DONZI Classic(powerboat).

Seeing there is nothing on your website, but you do include power boats, is this something you would consider?

Thanx, Lenny

Lenny: It sounds to me like you need to approach DONZI Directly for the table of offsets for the 18...And I would ask for the 16, 22 and Minx. The table of offsets would only require a single 8x11 sheet for each boat. Donzi could fax it directly to Trident. I wonder if Donzi would be concerned about the lines going out there. I wouldn't think so because an existing boat can be measured in a matter of hours. Then again.. there is the matter of licence to use the name on your aftermarket product.

Check up on it. I live 15 minutes away from Trident. If I can be of any help, let me know.
