There are always discussions on here about what classic looks best, windshields or not, and always interest in seeing a different boat. Here are a few pics I stumbled upon of a 1982 22 I let get away from me in the early 90's. This was before the 22's came standard with a windshield. It was a beautiful boat and ran in the mid 60's with a stock 330-TRS. To reflect on some recent threads: Porpoising was not an issue, I removed the bennett tabs as I didn't think they were needed. No stereo. Cleaver Prop. The lifting ring worked fine. No advice on this boat is needed because like a dummy, I sold it. Ed

WOW! That's a beautiful boat. I like the aronow edition fairing on my '05. When I don't want the wind in my face I have clamp on wind deflectors from www.windaway.com (http://www.windaway.com)

I always thought the compass in the deck was a classy nautical touch.

Very nice look!!

After spending weeks on my window problems I'm almost thinking about pulling it off and filling some holes.

I wish I ran it with it off to see how it would have been.

I've been on that bridge a few times....

Nice boat, I like the 2 tone stripes!

Do you have any records of the hull #??
The hull # is DMR220371181. The two-color stripe was custom ordered by the first owner (I was 2nd) who was a dentist and graduated from Michigan and wanted the school colors. The blue on the boat is Donzi Lion's Blue, the yellow on the stripe is Cigarette Yellow #5947. In looking for this info I stumbled across other Donzi "stuff" like some brocheures from that time, pics attached, and some Donzi price lists. In '82 the 22 with the 330TRS was 26,689--same engine was offered in the 18 for 25,310--the Hornet II with that engine was 28,565--the Criterion SS was 37,016. The 85/86 price list has the 22 with the 330 for 38,995. In 87 the list price for a 22 with a 370TRS was 48,595 and the Hornet III was 51,195. Useless but interesting info.

If I'm reading the model list right, this is only the second year the 22C was made. to bad it got away.

$37K in '82 is $75K today!!!
Would there be much of a market today for a single engine 22' boat that cost 75K?
Somehow, I don't think so.

Gee Let's ask the 3 or 4 people that have the Special Editions...maybe Rick S can comment on this... although I know he did not pay that kinda Jing for his Toy. :bonk:

But it really puts things into perspective...from this angle...I would say getting a New 22 Classic now for 48 to 52,000 would be a Bargain.

The deck on this boat differs - it does not have the ledge around the cockpit like the 22s with a windshield.

My problem with the SE's is it's still the same 22C. For instance, other than the red gel, I could turn a new 22C into an Aronow Edition for $2000.00 or less.
At least w/a Criterion, the deck treatment was very distinctive and unusual.
But the real question is how many Criterions could you sell today?

The suggested retail on my 2002 22-SE with options and the Myco Trailer was $94,670. There was no market for a $90K 22-C in 2002-2003. SE-#1 was built to spark interest and hard to sell. SE-#2 was special ordered as a sold unit. SE-#3 (my boat) was built to compensate a dealer for past warranty work from the factory.

As a reference, retail for a no options 2003 22-C w/496HO was $52,136

$40K to $50K does seem high for 80's pricing.

Nice 22, only the third one I've seen w/o the windshield.

Hi Eugene, I also had a '67 barrelback, solid red with a white stripe. I saw it in an APBA circle race (an I/O class) in Lakeport about 1970 and I was instantly hooked on Donzi's -- I ended up buying the same boat a year later.
The guys that owned it had a meat co. in S.F., they towed it with a truck that had "You might beat our boat, but you can't beat our meat!" written on the side. Speaking of 18's what is the status of yours? Have you splashed it yet, or are you still working on the final stages of the "Eugene Perfection" process? I saw your Magnum at Richmond Park a few weeks ago so I guess you are still a part-time Lake County resident. Ed

I looked very hard at ordering an SE500 boat for about nine months.
Great looks, better laminate schedule, exclusive monster gauges, different interior, better drive, latham steering, offshore mounts, and that great motor.

Couldn't get over the out the door price which was in the low to mid-60's with a trailer.

So I did my own to my tastes. You know what? All of this cool stuff added up to the same cash I would have spent on the factory boat or more! It certainly doesn't look that much different than a normal 22 Classic, but it doesn't run like one either...

Roadtrip, that one still has the raised fiberglass coaming for the windshield. In the early years is was glassed on, then they made it a permanent part of the mold. This is how the no-windshield deck should look...

The older boats don't have any where near the ridge that the new ones do.

I was just wanted to post another picture of the "planet's fastest donzi", so people could see the difference.

It's all preference, but I'm a windshield guy. How else do you get bumble bees funneled up to your forehead at 80 w/o one? That'll leave a mark.

There was a dark blue '82 with a warm BBC/TRS with no windshield up here in Seattle for sale for a LONG time a couple of years ago. It had the sweet candy-stripe interior with the gunwale padding too. Anyone know where it ended up?

Ed,
Definitely still a Lake County member. I hope to pass the house on to my son one day. Although since I bought another place in Tahoe :bonk: we have been spending some time there also.

I usually head over to Richmond Park for the steak feed when I am too lazy to prepare dinner.
The Donzi is very close! Rick from CP Performance will be at my house Saturday morning to chase down a few ignition gremlins. If all goes well, I'll be enjoying it this weekend.
If your're in the area stop by.
Regards.

My '05 :wavey: (Go Wolverines)

Hey Carl, are those Wind-aways you have installed? Did you use the regular mount or the "steep windshield" mount? I just bought a pair and plan to install them this weekend. Did you do it yourself? How hard/easy was the job? How do they work? Are you satisfied?

Carl C
09-01-2005, 08:30 PM
Yes, they are "Wind-aways". I used the angle mount. They are easy to put together and use. I like mine. The AE fairing is awesome on hot days but when the temp. drops, the wind deflectors go on. I have my pie and eat it too - No windshield but wind protection when I want it!:cool!: www.windaway.com (http://www.windaway.com/) They barely flex at 73 MPH. You can store them in pillowcases if you didn't buy the special cases.

The padded dash looks tacky. Those dark seats will get hot:kaioken:. .

I'm also not wild about that dash, however, I disagree on dark seats. I think the "dark seats get too hot" theory is one of the big misconceptions in boating. I've had both. Our '69 has black seats and they always look pristine and like new -- we have had the boat for 34 years. White seats need a lot of care and cleaning to look good. I have had both. All it takes it a few beach towels to cover the seats (or to sit on if you didn't cover them) to resolve the problem. Any color other than pure white will get hot. -- it makes it interesting that we have almost as many opinions as members ;) .
Whatever floats your boat, Ed

I sold the boat to a collector of boats (he had 6 or 7 other Donzis and a fleet of wood boats) that spent the summers at his place at Lake Tahoe and the winters at a place he had in Florida (Winterpark I think?). The boats were split between the two locations. He also had a collection of antique airplanes :boggled: . I heard he sold this Donzi but I haven't talked to him in a long time. It likely could be tracked down ??

boatnut
09-02-2005, 08:57 AM
There is also the "interim" 22C with the bolt on windshield mounting area. :

There also were some prior to the bolt on ledge that had a bolt on windshield from Donzi (also some dealer installs of course) using the no windshield hull.
I have a picture of one somewhere. The way I heard the story was that Dick Clark of Sierra Boats in Tahoe was a Donzi dealer and annualy spent time with the Chisholms (sp?). He told me he convinced them that he could sell more Donzis in Tahoes climate if they would put a windshield on the then new 22. Dick Clark had one built for a 22 he had floored and convinced Chisholm to offer windshields on the 22. That was his story and he stuck to it  .

I have had two 18's with black interiors -- in my opinion light gelcoat and dark upholstry is the ultimate care/looks combination. Frying eggs is good :p .
