I need to invert my oil filter bracket on a big block and was wondering if there are any issues when doing this for hatch clearance. Will the oil drain back into the pan with every shutdown of the engine? If so is there a check valve on the newer models that helps retain the oil in the filter? I know I have seen later big blocks with the filter inverted.

Thanks,

Mark does you adaptor look like the one in post #2 in the thread below? That is the one I have, it has a check valve. My filter is mounted fairly high with the canaster down on the transom, I get instant pressure on start up.

Post #3 is a shot of the filter before I pulled the boat apart last year.

It looks like the bracket in #3. On my 86 the legs that bolt to the front of the exh. riser are about 1" tall and the bracket arm sweeps downward. On the 85 the legs are about 4' tall and the bracket then rises about another 1.5" upward. So what I did was flip the bracket and mounted it to the bracket that was supplied from S.M. Now it all sits about an inch above the valve cover and behind the P.S. pump.

I am pretty sure they all have the check valves. Would not hurt to prime the engine with a drill check the oil level, let it sit for a few days see if the level on the stick rises.
