Looks nice from the pic but $3000.00 sounds a bit steep even for an SS. But on the other hand it's all about suply and demand :frown: .

I agree. The last two I saw sold for less than $1500.

Nice looking drive.. but if it has been sitting 9 years it needs to be disassembled and likely the upper bearings need to be replaced cause they'll be rusty... Also after sitting 9 years it needs to be vacuum and pressure checked and the impeller needs to be replaced... the wear pads on the sides are NLA.. well one of them is NLA and the other is probably gonna be as soon as stock is depleted...

Price and parts are the PAIN part... What is the GAIN? In real world terms. Simply removing my current drive and bolting this one on. Are they stronger and capable of higher HP? [procharger] Is it considered a "surfacing" drive? Would my Hydro Quad IV ot be a good match????? What could I expect after switching it over?

roughly 6 - 7 mph... bolt on... parts are ALL STANDARD ALPHA Gen I... except for the housings... and a few odds and ends... gears bearings, shafts *cept vertical), water pump, etc.. all GEN I alpha...

The Quad IV O/T is a good choice it is what i run on the 16/SS.. but you'll likely have to go UP in pitch an inch or two... Or live with a bit higher HP...

Drive strength is subjective... i know folks that have broken em behind 300 hp and i know those who will build em and guarantee em to 550 hp... i know folks that have em behind 400 hp and beat the HELL out of them for a few years between rebuilds...

Ditto on the wear pads, I had to make one for mine.

I have 1 on my classic 18 I allways new it was different and never saw 1 before. MOP told me what it was last week when he saw it. I paid 1800 to have it rebuilt a few years ago now i'm running alittle over 350 HP's threw it and no problems. The boat handles real good with it 2 .

I could rebuild 2 of them for that price, with new HD gears, and water pumps, and have money left over...

What speeds are you hitting? What prop???

If I may at this point John has no idea of top speed, last week we ran side by side I was turning 65.3 he was holding back at 5800 turning a 23" wheel. I could see he still had a handful of throttle left, I have been keeping an eye out for a 25-26 for him to try. He stepped in Doo Doo, he stopped by my machinists shop and asked about getting a motor built, by a stroke of luck Vince had built a hot 350 for someone else that had not come to claim it(in a very long time) John jumped on it for just what Vince had in it. All he knows is it has a ton of torque, it accelerates like a cannon shot, I can't wait to see what it does turn propped out.

It was not easy to do..... But...... SOLD. Figure there isnt much I could do to get more gain even with that price. He syas it was pressure/vaccume tested and checked over before it sat for years. Also had the impeller replaced. Will an impeller degrade without use? Ill check it all out anyways to be sure no rust inside etc. Says he was going to put it on a cig 20, but sold the boat instead. Who knows.... But I will have an SS Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh :wavey: :D

Now the fun begins............selecting a prop. The Impeller won't degrade but it will take a set. Keep in touch and let us know how things progress.
