Can someone explain what the function of the snap-down cover on the foredeck is on these boats?

They seem to have all come that way.

not sure of the reason but is like a luan sp? real thin wood ,screw down cover
maybe to save the weight of a fiberglass deck??
really neat boats unique styling and from what I hear very fast
