Simple question- but I want to do it right. What fram oil filter fits the factory remote oil housing? ('96 454 mag with v-belts and carb)

How many quarts of oil? Is 10w40 ok?

Previous owner says oil has to be sucked out, no drain plug. What's the best way to do this?

7qts, use a Mobil 1 M1-111 filter. There is a drain plug but it will all go in the bilge unless you have that nice Merc oil drain hose accessory that runs it out thru the boats drain plug, otherwise suck it out the dipstick tube. Read

it is all you will ever need to know and more on oil/filter/etc. Mobil 1 VTwin 20W-50 synthetic seems to be the winner currently, and for some sound reasons. BTW, you have a Gen VI block with the roller cam setup.

Suck it out through the dipstick tube. There are various pump/gadgets that will do this. I like the Tempo Oil Boy fluid extractor.

Engine oil and filter type are usually hotly debated topics. Everyone has their own favorite.

Your engine should take about 8 quarts of oil with the remote filter. If I remember right, the manual says to use straight 40 weight oil. However, most people run multi-vis. Most of the Mobil-1 synthetic crowd (myself included) run 15w50 Mobil-1 synthetic. Lots of non synthetic people run 20w50.

Filters can sometimes be hard to fit based on the amount of room you have at the remote filter. I use the shorter Mobil-1 111 but will probably try the M1 302 at the next change. Here's a list from OSO:

Thanks for the replies! I also seached all over offshore.com and got too many answers. I hiit pep boys and came back with a case of Castrol HD straight 40w, two Purolator One pretty blue oil filters, and an oil sucker/pump thingy.

This is the first 10 hour just-broke-in-the-engine oil change. I don't want to switch to synthetic yet. Maybe next summer.

Hopefully the 40w will bring up the oil pressure, I was only getting 30psi @ cruise (2500-3500rpm).

Be sure to warm up your motor before sucking the oil out. It will be easier on your arm if using a manual pump.

Ack! The oil filter is too tall! I bought the Purolator pure ONE PL34631 and it'll hit the exhaust manifold. What's the part number for a shorter one?

............all good advice. I use straight 40WT Valvoline or any other good brand. Remember that marine engines needs lots of protection, they work 100% of the time, unlike automobiles.

Yes, regarding the above post suggesting to use the M1-302 and many many many others on that list.........THEY WILL NOT FIT (YOUR 96), until the later years when merc flipped the filter over.

Martini boat marine design makes a single filter bracket you could mount on the transom.

As others stated get the engine good and warm first or you will be pumping a LONG time!

I actually run warm water through mine on the hose. Never seems to get warm enough with that ice cold water running through it!

I would be checking into the oil pressure.
It seems low to me...
