I am curious, is the Alpha drive something that should be upgraded to a Bravo or possibly beefier Alpha Gen II standards on the Z33?
My 87 has rebuilt units but I am not certain if they are updated to Gen II. Also does it make a difference having the units turn the same way or in an opposed manner? I would think the stock 330+ hp is already pushing the limits of the drive units and the torque would be an issue if they turn the same way.

The Bravo One came out in the 1987 era. Before that, they tried an Alpha 1 with 1:30 to 1 ratio. They all burned up. So, they went to a 1:50 to 1, which they use today. I'd certainly go with a Bravo One otdrive for the Z-33. The Alpha is just too small.
From what I have seen the Alphas don't do well when spun in opposite directions the lefty blows the bearing housing out the back. The Bravo is a nice upgrade and they are happy spinning either way. If you are not beating the drives the Alphas do just fine, there are 1000's out there behind some pretty big cruisers, most with air and gen sets. We have a bunch of pretty old ones that have high hours and are still ticking. The main problem with Merc drives is no oil circulation, use Merc HiPo oil and a shower is a good idea. All that being said I know where there is a brandy new in the box lefty Alpha!
