Dual battery utilization?

I have a dual battery setup on my boat and usually only wind up running with just battery 1 turned on.

What's the recommended way to utilize the batteries? When do you use one or the other and when do you want both?

A tip given to me many years back was to use the odd battery on odd days and the even one on even days, Both really should only be used when needed for extra starting boost, we were taught that no two batteries even when new are exactly alike. When you run in both one battery will be seeking current and the other will be being slightly over charged shortening its life a bit. You can add isolators or combiners to keep both charged no matter whether in the 1 or 2 position on the switch.
