engine compartment

do any of the16 owners have a piece of plywood inside their compartment up against the back seat ? it is about 1/2 inch thick ... waffled foam is glued to it .. i would like to remove for the extra space forward ... any ideas why it is there ?

Sound deadening. All later Classics have it. You do gain a lot of space w/o it.

My 91 16 did not have it, I can just imagine what a pain it must be for space. Adjusting belts and timing is tough on a 16 even without it.
