How do I tell the HP rating on my stock 1996 454? I need some help decoding the numbers. I'm assuming that with a rated rpm of 5000 RPM I have the 365 HP carb 454. I'm told the only difference in the two carbed 454's is the head ports.

How do you know you are "rated" for 5000 rpm?

Also, I believe there are more differences between the 365 and the 330 hp big blocks. The higher rated versions have different rotating assemblies, IIRC. I do know it's more than just the ports.

I believe the correct rating is 350 gross hp @ 5200 max revs, if this is a "magnum" engine. If it is not, power rating will be dowm to 310-330hp @ 4600.

A365 hp 454 has a higher intake look waare i=the intake bolts to the heads if thay look square its a 365 also the 365 ran a alunimum intake with a brass water crossover molded in the intake 365 also has forged pistons 7/16 rods and a bigger cam...if you still cant tell take off your thermostat housing and see if its a brass color ...

How do you tell how much HP it is? Well, If its stock the answer is simple.....NOT ENOUGH. If it is the 330 don't spend too much money on it. The heads are referred to as "Peanut Port heads" ( pull a valve cover and look up the casting # if needed) and they will limit any "peak performance improvements" manufacturers claim, in particular, intakes and exhaust. The 330's are 4 bolt truck motors but stock deck height, cast crank, cast pistons and smaller rods with 3/8 bolts. That being said, the internals last because those heads will not flow what is needed to break them.....hmmm...protect the weak links with smaller ports, why didn't I think of that, oh ya, when my customers ask how long their warranty is I tell to run it as hard as they can and let off when they feel their wallet start flappin'. I got my Z-33 Crossbow at upholstery now, paint's done and I need to assemble the 532's once I decide Whipples w/FI or the 1150 dominators I have. (ya, ya....before the smart ass remarks about how easy that choice is, you DO have to stop somewhere, or so I’ve heard)
BTW.....A forged crank has a 1/2" wide "casting flange" area from the back of the lower timing gear to the first rod journal and a cast crank has real casting flange flashing that is just a thin line created by the mold halves. If your pans are off you can tell.
AND...............I have a one comlpete 454/330 out of my boat left and one drive if anyone in the NW needs. Funny, they ran PERFECT and I just HAD to tear it apart. I'll probably get it done and running again, oh lets just say, AFTER our summer and just in time for winter. For all you FL and Cali gays, thats when it gets cold. Its 90 ish in Seattle today. I'm just thinkin of all the money I saved in gas for my boat this weekend, haaaaaaaaa. Have a good holiday all and be safe out there, "The life you save could be mine." (James Dean)
