My wife and I have finally decided to purchase the fifth wheel of our dreams. Problem is it is way down south in Texas:eek!: The deal is the guy wants to sell the whole package..fifth wheel and Ford F-350 2WD Crew Cab:p ..

So we figure fly in to San Antonio....buddy picks us up at the airport....we spend a day going over everything...agree on final price........then hook up and go....

If the mechanical and inspection don't pan out...we simply fly home..........next day...

But now I'm looking at the shortest most direct route home and wife says let's go to Vegas:beer: ...As I have never taken this route before I thought some of you may have some ideas or directions...must see advice sort tof thing..I'm figuring taking a week to 10 days to complete the trip???I am a little hesitant of the mountain ranges but with the Turbo Diesel I figure aaahhhh we can do it???

Any advice?

Mike/Chris/Braeden 5 yr old:biggrin.:

Mike, been there done that. It took us 75 hours to get to Houston, NON-STOP, no sleep that we were aware of ;) , and three breakdowns. Home from Dallas TX to Vancouver in 55 hours, non-stop towing something small.

You will LOVE seeing that place. I will never forget the look of the Country North of Possum heading to Lubbock and areas like that. It is absolutely beautiful and the "non-freeways" are better than our freeways. You can drive for a couple of hours at a time and pass no one. This place is so neat that I had to bring home a "stone" to remind me of the Mesquite, the bugs, the heat, the people, the place...

You will LOVE this trek. Remind me to throw a grand $$$$ your way and put in a REAL SMOKER into the fifth wheel on the way home. They don't make that kind of stuff here.

Thanks for the info:hyper:

I just got back from BCAA where they are printing us up a trip ticket detailing some routing options. I suspect we will make a holiday out of it...i.e. Take our time..Relax in the days and drive more at night?

My 5yr old can't sit in a seat for 8-10 hours a day so we plan on :chillpill 'nnn
in the days and drive more when he is sleeping..

I now have to go to the insurance company to see how to do the registration/licensing thing???? permits???

Looks like we will fly down next week..The dates depend on when my bank get's me my $$$ in my hot little hands..

Lenny, Where do I get these smokers? make/model etc. Maybe we can get a couple..if they are not toooo big..?

Wes , PM me and I will look you up when I'm down or e-mail me at firemike@telus.net Maybe you can have a peek at this package before I go?

I always heard that you couldn't drive that far north in anything from TEXAS because once you crossed the Mason Dixon line, the diesel would gel up and those horns on the hood would try to hook onto an overpass or something...

Mike, they are BIG, very, about 3/16 plate, black and did I say BIG... They are about $800 US and they are worth it. You will never get the same thing or even see the same thing up here. We can load ours with Hickory, Alder, etc and bulk purchase Mesquite through restuarant chains. :D

Thriller, your not far from me and I have driven the Vegas trip way to many times. I have done the Cali route, Utah route, and straight up through the state.

My recomendations since you are pulling is to head up the state and cross over to Cali from Reno. Not a bad run. A few hills between Nevada and Cali and the lower section of Oregon.

BTW, we were pulling a 35' enclosed car hauler with a NASCAR racecar inside, using a 3500 Chev dually (and some of it was in the snow - November).

Utah aint bad, and the hills in Oregon are all interstate, but getting from Pendelton to BC is kind of an out of the way toss up. If you do go that route, run down through the gorge to I-5. We've done that same route with the trailer. (Hermiston races) Not a bad run, but don't know the mileage diff from the Reno route. You probably don't want to run up to Ellensburg and then over 90 because it gets pretty hilly.

Go with Reno to Cali. And hurry up!!!!!! Chelan is only a few weeks away

I will look at these routes tonight and start planning the trip....

I appreciate the feedback

Lenny This smoker seems Too Big...will it fit in the door? I guess it's all in a box or something? I'll ask Wes when I chat with him..He's going to take a look at the Truck and Fifth Wheel for me:) I hope to spend a couple days there and maybe get out with Wes and Jen for a rip in the 18"

Can't begin to tell ya what this site means to me..Great People all over the globe...

nope Mike, it is that BIG. Everything is big there and these are no exception, nor the Statue of Sam Houston as you drive into town :D

Neat place. Mike, no they will not fit but we could not buy the steel here for $800. These things are awesome. Next time... :D

What to recommend has a lot to do with how active you are, and whether you want to see cultural sites or natural sites.

Spend some time in San Antonio, see the Alamo and take the Canal Tour at night with all the x-mas lights lite up.

Take interstate 10 to Ft Stockton, then north 385 To Calsbad Caverns, do the tour, Then El Paso. Take Interstae 10 to Las Cusces then north on Interate 25 to West Interstate 40. Just past Winslow there will be an exit south to Meter Crater. Everyone has seen pictures of this Crater, but its very impressive in person. Then back out to 40 and head west. At Kingman take 93 north to Hoover Dam. You may be asked to have your 5th wheel searched. And the only parking you will find, will be the first set of parking lots as you first decend in to the canyon.
After Hoover Dam, go to Las Vegas.

You will be taking the bus back from here, so the rest of the route isn't important...

We were able to run about 50 through the hills between Reno and Cali. Gas was the only worry. Could only get about 200 miles on a fill and the trip from Vegas to Tonopah was like 192 miles or something like that. Ran out 4 miles from town coming up the hill.

From Seattle to Vegas it's about 1000 miles.

Uncle Fester, Do you race at Wenatchee oval? If yes we probably know some of the same people.

Fuel is a concern in Nevada it can be a long distance between stations. Least thats how I remember it from driving Penske rental truck with my furniture to AZ from Tahoe in 1993/4 ish. Northern Cali is a little better in that regard. Hoover is an awsome site, not into tourist stops when driving places but thats worth it! I've done Seattle to L.A. 3 times this year, hate rental cars preffer my own! A town called Corning in Northern Cali has a Native American Casino called Rolling Hills, best rest stop for food on the trip. Good I-5 access but no fuel, buffet is usually excellant. When leaving Cali into Or., stop in Yreka for fuel even if its just a top up. Not many places after that and you enter mountains, plus the price goes up for the few places that offer it. Once in Oregon another great rest/food stop second place to Rolling Hills is Seven Feathers Hotel and Casino / Resort in Canyonville. Easy on off to the I-5 good buffet and nice gas station. The nice thing about Indian Casinos along most of the freeways in most states, besides food. They always have ample RV parking with hook-ups, etc. Bonus, they often have security patrols, so they are safe and free as well.

Have a good trip!!! :wavey:

:jestera: Jr. .....You crack me up! :cards: I like your way of travelling routes. That crater sounds like the perfect place to set up the smokers:) They should fit right.

Space is limited in the box of the truck with the swivel hitch and low clearance but I'm not ruling it out til I see one of these things. Look forward to the border guards quizzing me about those bad boys:yes:

600lbs more over the axle.....I don't know...I hope it has Firestones Ride Rites?Sounds too heavy but we could always get the one..And it's got your name on it Lenny:smile:

Wes is checking the unit out on Saturday:beer:

Uncle Fester, Do you race at Wenatchee oval? If yes we probably know some of the same people.

Not anymore. They're not running super late models up there (tour cars). We only did WVSO a few times because it was too expensive to bring the car and crew from Bremerton. Even a first place finish wouldn't cover the cost.

What you doin this weekend? Me and Kat are going to take a stab at the Cresent Bar scene. Gonna put in about 0630 Saturday morning and probably spend Saturday night on the boat. Maybe Monday we'll go up to Chelan (if I have any beads left)
