OK here's the question. I have a buddy that wants more power (who doesnt). Been tossin around some ideas 1 being a ZZ572 the other is buying all parts seperate and having it built by a local engine guy. Looking for 600-700 HP naturaly aspirated with closed cooling. Can that type of motor be built for around 13-15k? Not including labor (parts only) Also if my friend decides to build a new motor he will have a 496HO with 40hrs and remaining warranty for sale.

I asked my engine builder that question once...he said yes. :wrench:

Why not supercharge the 496?

"We" can get the 572 here from GM for 12K$, long block, no carb or manifold. Then you need to marinize it and add parts. It seems within reach if you ask me. And 650 FT.LBS all day long.

Bottom end is the "weak point" of the 496. With wipple and procharger you really cant run too much boost as it has high compression already. Whipple set up is around 5-6k. Procharger the same. A Raylar kit is around 6k plus 1-2 for old engine remove and install. And with these options your only going from 425 HP to around 550. So cost is around 8K

Build new motor with quality parts, around 15k. Sell 496Ho for 6-8k and your spending 7-8 k more out of poket (what you woulda spent anyway on SC setup) Now have strong azz motor with significantly more power and it's NA to boot.

Also, are there any engine guru's on the boards willing to :wrench: build :wrench: a motor? Of course there would be an appropriate commission  . Looking for 600-700 HP naturaly aspirated.... any takers? or anyone got a good engine guy? :biggrin.:

I'm building a big ford for my 22 as we speak. I should make close to 700 natural aspirated hp. Minus the price of the core and marinized parts I started with on the stock engine I've spent somewhere around 7K. But it's not a stroker motor so with the 572 you're looking @ at least a grand for a high quality crank.

My bad. I thought people were running them at 600 hp without problems.

I'm definitely no motor builder, but from what I have heard building high hp NA motors is very expensive. I think $13-15k is a little on the light side.

Gorilla....

The power the N/A motor will make will depend on cam choice... and that depends on exhaust choice. Too much cam duration and you have water reversion with your run of the mill "wet" exhaust systems. If he is going to go with a dry exhaust, then all bets are off! :shocking: You can make some big numbers that way. Of course depending on local noise ordinances you could be paying for it every time you use the boat. The other issue with big power N/A motors is ease of starting...

I would Whipple the 496, turn key 600HP all day long, fuel injection, better fuel economy, full knock protection, no funky carb issues... Whipple are the only ones allowed to play with the Merc computer code to your PCM555 controller to adjust all of the sensors to adapt to the blower, including the all important fuel curve. I think Dustin actually posted you get about 610hp at 5300rpm...
